Publisher's summary

The best-selling author of Enigma and Fatherland turns to today's Vatican in a ripped-from-the-headlines novel and gives us his most ambitious, pause-resisting thriller yet - where the power of God is nearly equaled by the ambition of men.

The pope is dead. Behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel, 118 cardinals from all over the globe will cast their votes in the world's most secretive election. They are holy men. But they have ambition. And they have rivals. Over the next 72 hours, one of them will become the most powerful spiritual figure on earth.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Roy McMillan takes full advantage of the opportunity to display his range. While not strictly miraculous, his transformation of Cardinal Lomeli, the protagonist, from dispirited to Spirit-filled is most certainly charismatic.... McMillan's performance is a triumph, as is the book itself." (AudioFile)

Papal page turner

I listened to this story mostly today. I was hooked.
I love the descriptions of the process each Cardinal has to agree to. The various characters all felt like someone who comes and goes every day.
It keeps you guessing. Not scary. Story is well laid out, beautifully told and read. Would gladly recommend it to a friend.

Made me feel part of the election

Wow! I am the first to admit how picky I am regarding thrillers. This took my breath. Other titles in this genre doing the same has been "I am Pilgrim" "Crazy house" and the "You trilogy's two first books. Just to give you a pointer regarding my general thriller-taste.

I know people mention this book together with the work of Dan Brown. Like "I am Pilgrim",this title appeared more realistic than Brown in my opinion.

I too wish it had an alternative ending, but I feel it was one awesome listen.

If you like Robert Harris.

I like this author and this is right up there with his best. A little short. The reader does voices really well. It’s like he melts right into the story. I’m going to check out more read by him.

BRILLIANT, Engrossing, & Absolutely Unpredictable

The narration second to none, and this gifted author has painstakingly worked to get the minutia right. A masterpiece of contemporary—and some day, historical—fiction, mystery, & drama.

Awesome book until the asinine twist at the end

I was totally into this book until the plot twist at the end, which ruined the entire book for me. It’s entirely implausible and seems to be there for no reason other than to be edgy or push an agenda (another reviewer said this same thing.) it would have been a great story in its own right without the twist.

Returned Due to Intermittent Whistle

There is a quiet whistle sound in the background intermittently throughout the audio. I hoped it would stop but after a couple hours of constant distraction I gave up and returned the book.

I’m really disappointed because after reading the reviews slamming the book because of LBGTQ representation/support I really wanted to be able to write a glowing , detailed review in support of the book with the added bonus of knowing it would annoy the bigots who are fine seemingly with the ~actual~ immoral acts depicted in the book.

Remarkable story of how a pope is elected.

The reader was eloquent and respectful of the story. Recommend this to anyone regardless of their faith.

Perplexing ending

Confused by the finale. What was the author trying to convey. Was this promoting a trans agenda.

Fantastic work by author and narrator

This book was a page turner or in my case stuck in your car and can’t stop the book! Beautiful descriptions of the Catholic cardinal community and the process to elect a pope. Then you throw in a mystery that was so well done. The ending will blow you away! But what really struck me was finding a sense of spiritual renewal. Being a rebellious Catholic and have lost faith in any church, the words of the author stirred that sense of God and goodness within a church. But the mystery just ties it all together and I was so lost into the world of the Conclave. Very well done. Now I can watch the movie.

Emotion, Details, and Fascinating

I found this book fascinating and detailed. Characters deep and real. The voice performance was complete and full of the reality of a well told story. I found myself in a hurry to get back to the story every time I paused my player.

A great listen and I just finished the second time through!
