About this listen

When Pentandra got married and took a new job, she knew it would be tough.

Ducal Court Wizard is supposed to be the cushiest of assignments for a mage, full of stipends, laboratories, and expense funds. But when you join the Orphan Duke’s expedition to reclaim, recapture, and restore his shattered realm to health, you have to expect things to be...less cushy.

With the south in full rebellion, the goblins stirring on the northern frontier, and the summer capital being run by a corrupt baron and a gang of thugs, things could be better. But those aren’t the worst of her problems: Pentandra is learning how to live with her new husband, Arborn, while the town is driven to distraction by an incarnate sex goddess who is organizing all of the whores, a mopey spellmonger, a nun addicted to gambling, a prude sent by the queen, undead skulking through the shadows, and a mysterious blind girl shows up in her office claiming to be her new apprentice!

It’s enough to drive any woman mad, but Pentandra is not just any woman...she’s the hope of the Alshari Wilderlands, the woman everyone knows as the Court Wizard!

Sometimes alternative views make for a good story

while most of this book is a recount or the last from another point of view it was not long until I was enjoying the story even though I knew parts of it.

True to the Spellmonger Series.....

There are many reasons that I have fallen in love with the spellmonger story, but the very first reason was the personalities behind all of the characters that Terry has created. Of course my personal favorite is Minalan, but a close second was always Penny. Many questions are answered about the second strongest mage in the land and yet many questions about the main story line are raised! This series keeps getting better and better.

I have enjoyed every book in this series!

John Lee's performance is perfection. He by rings life to the character with distinct personalities. If you enjoy fantasy, Terry Mancour provides it best through his stories. Outstanding on all facets of his bookd.

the story continues

I was sceptical at the beginning when I heard who this book was mainly written about, but it turned out to be fantastic as usual. more courtly than great battles and whatnot, but I still had trouble taking my headphones off my head as usual.

Optional to an extent

Not a big fan at first since it's a retelling from a different POV and some conversations are recycled but I really enjoyed the extra world building and I laughed out loud at a couple parts, unless you really hate this character i would recommend.

beginning was slow and difficult to understand, but once into a few chapters it started to become understandable.

Pentandra

I am so grateful to Terry for creating this volume from the perspective of Penny. She is one of my favorite characters.

A comment

This was a tough listen for me, a lot of politics in the early stages which can be quite boring in the best of times, a little more humor might have doused that I think.. Having said that I feel I got to know some of the characters from the earlier books a little better, that has to be a plus. John Lee's performance kept this book alive for me, he gets better as he chugs along, well done Sir.
