About this listen
A hilarious and heartwarming New York Times best-selling novel - the basis for the acclaimed major motion picture!
"There's rich, there's filthy rich, and then there's crazy rich.... A Pride and Prejudice-like send-up about an heir bringing his Chinese-American girlfriend home to meet his ancestor-obsessed family.” (People)
When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor.
On Nick’s arm, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane, and soon, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money, new money, nosy relatives, and scheming social climbers.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Story
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases - job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with as well as way less experience in the dating department than the average 30-year-old. It doesn't help that she has Asperger's and that French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. She decides that she needs lots of practice - with a professional - which is why she hires escort Michael Phan.

Story
For Dee Kwan, every day is the perfect day. No, really. She has a house she loves, a job she adores, and a ridiculously attractive “nemesis” who never seems to mind when she wins their favorite online game. How can life possibly get better? (It can’t, obviously. It can only get much, much worse.) Soon Dee is forced to share her adorably cozy home with her parents and estranged grandmother. Then she’s tossed into the deep end at work, tasked with cleaning up a scandal for the intimidatingly chic luxury fashion firm Celeste. If that weren’t enough, she discovers her hot nemesis works there, too.

Story
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

This adventure story has everything you could want: a handsome good guy, a pretty heroine, some bad guys, sword fighting, revenge, romance, and of course a happy ending, along with “rodents of unusual size.” Join Westley (the plucky farm boy), Buttercup (the beautiful young maiden), Inigo Montoya (the driven, embittered swordsman), Prince Humperdinck (the scheming villain), and many other strange and unusual characters in this swashbuckling tale of good-natured silliness.

Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Crazy romp with crazies
This is one of the funniest and most tragic series I've read. It makes you wonder if an extreme excess of money makes everyone crazy. Guess I'll never know...

The was better than the movie.
After hearing about the movie from lots of friends I decided to start reading the book instead. Half way through the book I did watch the film because I was interested in seeing how different it would be compared. Yes, the book is more detailed than the movie and yes the book takes longer to get to the same point ( kind of) but there are points in the film I wish were in the book and vice-versa.
It is a good read for a beach day or a good audiobook for a long car ride but it doesn’t really stay with as a really good book should.

Enjoyable...and worthy of the hype!
Week after week, I kept seeing this movie showcased On Demand. As a voracious reader, I always like to read the book before seeing the movie. I'm beyond happy that I made the choice to read the book. I loved following the story of Rachel Chu, Nick Young and Astrid Young as they navigate their families, upcoming marriages and other relationships. I appreciated how the different segments of the story focused on the different protagonists, while also introducing us to other characters that influenced the story. It's also a cultural experience, as I learned about cultural norms, wealth, and the livelihoods in Chinese countries. The story is chockfull of villains, although not in the traditional sense, and heroes that you cheer for. There are also key characters who have motives that may reveal them as heroes or villains in the further entries of the series. The book is packed with humor and heart, with some harsh truths about family and cultural assimilation that resonate for all cultures and races. I also have to acknowledge that this book advances Asian representation in media and demonstrates that culturally specific stories can be relatable and enjoyable for all readers.

So Much Fun
This book is so much fun! I felt like I was getting all of the gossip about the most fascinating group of people. The narrator did a great job with the different accents and voices!
The writing was distracting-- someone please tell Kevin Kwan he doesn't need so many dialogue tags-- but I was able to get over it for the story's sake! I'm excited to see what everyone gets up to in the sequels.

Immensely Enjoyable!
Lynn Chen's performance was on point! Her annunciations and pronunciations of the artists, designers, plants, paintings, etc made it all so glamorous! I'm looking forward to watching the movie, but alas, I feel it will not live up to Lynn Chen's expert story telling.
