Acerca de esta escucha

This is the hidden side of D-Day which has fascinated readers/listeners around the world.

Almost all accounts of D-Day are told from the Allied perspective, with the emphasis on how German resistance was overcome on June 6, 1944. But what was it like to be a German soldier in the bunkers and gun emplacements of the Normandy coast, facing the onslaught of the mightiest seaborne invasion in history? What motivated the German defenders, what were their thought processes - and how did they fight from one strong point to another, among the dunes and fields, on that first cataclysmic day? What were their experiences on facing the tanks, the flamethrowers and the devastating air superiority of the Allies?

This book sheds fascinating light on these questions, bringing together statements made by German survivors after the war, when time had allowed them to reflect on their state of mind, their actions and their choices of June 6. We see a perspective of D-Day which deserves to be added to the historical record, in which ordinary German troops struggled to make sense of the onslaught that was facing them, and emerged stunned at the weaponry and sheer determination of the Allied soldiers. We see, too, how the Germans fought in the great coastal bunkers, perceived as impregnable fortresses, but in reality often becoming tombs for their crews. Above all, we now have the unheard human voices of the individual German soldiers - the men who are so often portrayed as a faceless mass.

This is such a refreshing alternative perspective to all the writings about D-day. To hear the Germans views of the European front and how they viewed their cause is interesting.

Fascinating Perspective

This rare small book is universally applicable to modern combat. It’s worth reading (or on my case listening) by anyone who is in military combat arms, or who aspires to be in combat arms, to fully comprehend the carnage and randomness of warfare.

Surprising insights into D-Day combat

This book is interviews with German soldiers who survived the war and experienced D-Day. They describe their experiences and what they saw with great detail and color. The narration is superb because each story is told with a different voice that has a German accent.

Extremely well done.

Interesting to hear the other side of D-Day. It was brutal for everyone. This is very graphic. If thats not your style then this book isn’t for you. It is done in an interview style.

Seems very legit

If you’re a D-Day buff, you need to listen to these stories - wow. They’re both graphic and enlightening. Can’t believe I almost passed this up.

An easy give stars! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gives one a completely new way of envisioning and learning about the battle that took place on the beaches and inland of Normandy. It is true - history is written by the victors, and up until mow, the victory as written by the allies has been my only way of understanding the battle. As a combat veteran myself, I found the vivid and detailed descriptions to be very accurate and truly intense. I thank the author, and Audible for making this audio book availabe.

Very intense - a new view of D-Day that's been needed for a long time

Very interesting to hear the German perspective of D-Day, my grandfather landed at Omaha Beach and fought the Germans over the course of the next 10 months - I found it fascinating to hear their stories of that surreal day.

Fascinating book

I just happened along this wonderful book. I wanted something to read and was browsing Audible. I found this short facinating book which gave me a view of D Day June 6th 1944 which I realized I have been missing. I've listened to a number of fascinating books from the view of individual German soldiers during WWII. I am always struck by the horrible inhumane conditions brought onto ordinary people by their terrible leaders in pursuit of their monstrous goals. The brave resolute actions of normal human beings being manipulated by so called leaders always drives home the waste of war. Such wonderful people. my heart goes out to them. May the people who decided to waste their lives in such a brutal faction for such ludicrous reasons be damned for all time.

A small diamond.
