About this listen

#1 New York Times bestseller J.R. Ward shares the passionate star-crossed love story of fan favorite, and original member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Darius.

Darius, son of Marklon, isn’t looking for love the night destiny comes to claim him. He’s also not expecting to crash his new car. But when a human woman runs out into the road and he must swerve to avoid killing her...everything goes off course.

Disillusioned by his King’s lack of leadership and the losses in the war against the Lessening Society, Darius finds purpose in protecting a woman he cannot make his own. Love finds a way, however—until the truth of what he is comes out and she leaves him in horror.

Unbeknownst to them both, Anne is carrying his young, a female who is destined to be Queen—and after a tragic reunion, he vows to protect their daughter. Resigned to perpetual sadness, he is determined to serve the memory of his beloved no matter the cost...unless by some miracle, fate sees fit to once again bring them together in this tale that is “full of drama, intrigue, and steamy restraint” (Booklist).

Critic reviews

"Narrator Jim Frangione returns the listener to the vampire world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Frangione brings edginess to his performance. In the past, before the other vampires found happiness, vampire Darius encountered a human named Anne when he accidentally hit her with his car. His world was changed forever. Frangione expresses the happiness Darius now feels as he comes to realize that Anne is his fated mate. This is in stark contrast to how he feels when he loses her, scenes that Frangione delivers with all of Darius’s grief and anguish. Adding depth to the narration, Darius's butler, Fritz, is given a helpful tone that demonstrates his eagerness to please. Listeners will enjoy this glimpse of Darius’s world."AudioFile Magazine

That you can immediately hit play and re-enter a beloved new world, or love story, or era from history is a gift to the devoted listener. But how to pick just 100 of these unique and immersive listening journeys? We defined a series as having a minimum of three books, and—after some debate—we decided the titles had to be anchored in fiction. Worth the wait!!!

BDB fans have wanted more info about Darius for years. With this story we learn about what went down between him and Beth’s mom. For me, it was definitely worth the wait. As usual the book contained Ward’s trademark writing style and great world building. Here’s some other things I loved about the book.

- We get a great view of Wrath pre-Beth.
- Holy cow was I thrilled with who delivered Beth. I was hoping it would be who it was and was psyched that I had guessed correctly. The name wasn’t familiar at first as it had been years since I’d last come across it but it was who I thought it was.
- I’m from Upstate NY so I love the extra little details that Ward puts in her books that are true to life. However one thing in the book was so unexpected that I literally burst out in excitement when I heard it. I hadn’t thought of that grocery store in ages! It left the area almost 30 years ago. But yeah, it was here in the ‘80s which is when this book is set.
- The epilogue was AMAZING and SURPRISING. Plus it made me 😭

This prequel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series was absolutely fantastic. It’s been a few years since I last listened to a JR Ward novel and this story made me seriously miss the brothers. Now I’m itching to start the series all over again! Bring on the Black Dagger Brotherhood World binge!

Frangione gave his usual solid performance. He’s good at what he does, I won’t deny it. I just prefer my narrators to change up their voice more. Especially when practically every secondary character is a male. Well, except for Frtiz. Fritz has his own voice. I always know when he’s speaking.

Fantastic story about what started it all.

This is a great story. I’ve loved Darius since the beginning, even if he was such a small part he was still incredibly integral to the story as a whole. Without none of the BDB books would have been possible because Beth wouldn’t be here. I loved reading about him and I can’t wait to read more from the BDB world.

This book is best read after The Savior.

TOO SHORT....but so many feels

No words...Ward does it again! I laughed, I cried and I fell in love with Darius! Thank you for this gift! He was the Brother that glued them together and it was only fitting that his story was told...Although it's shorter than I would've liked, it was well written. The story had ups & downs...but the ending was emotional & fulfilling...loved it! Jim, as always, a true genius that gave Darius his voice & brought him to life!

Whoa

That's all I've got. Dispite knowing how the love story ends I still balwed like a baby. For me this audio answered many questions that have plagued me throughout the series. I can't express how wonderful this book is. I wish it was longer more in depth in places but I really have no complaints.

Cried my Eyes out!

It was as if I was reading Dark Lover all those years ago. Darius was the beginning of the Brotherhood, and the ending. Even though I knew how it was going to end it still had me weeping, I loved Darius, For me he was the unsung hero through out the books and the Brotherhood. He deserved is own book, and I am glad JR Ward had written it in her style of humor and wit.
And Jim Frangione, gave Darius his voice and his wings. He is a great narrator and I am so happy he does the brotherhood proud. I can't say enough about Mr. Frangione he is the best at what he does.

Heartfelt

Grabs your heart from the very beginning. Two unlikely souls, a predestined? meeting and a steep and narrow road to a forever love. Keep your Kleenex within reach.

Small gem of a story.

I loved this story. It seemed to wrap up and tie together pieces of the origin that had seemed incomplete before. It also could stand on its own as a story of a life and a love.
