Finesse by Freda
Most books of this length run out of puff and anything approaching 20 hours often makes me a bit nervous. Not so with Dark Cathedral. I'm about an hour from the end and Freda Warrington has nailed this brilliantly. Though a work of fiction she has taken the time to understand the reality of pagan/wiccan faith and mixed in some darker beliefs as well - all in a credible, believable way. Add in religious mania in the form of radical christian belief and things spin wildly out of control. Freda is undeniably an accomplished wordsmith and has produced a work that starts slow and continues to build. I did have my doubts for about the first hour and a half that I would run out of patience and that the storyline would move too slowly to hold my interest but after that I was hooked. There are a mix of well defined characters and the story moves back and forth from the era of hysterical witch-hunts being common-place, to recent time without ever coming close to confusion. I take my hat off to any author that can encourage you to admire and disapprove of the same character simultaneously - not an easy thing to do. Highly recommended.
