About this listen

This program features multicast narration.

"Samantha Desz and January LaVoy take this novel to new heights by giving a realistic voice to every emotion and scene. Brava!"- The Reading Frenzy

"Narrators ... Samantha Desz and January LaVoy are ... perfect [in] Megan Goldin's latest thriller involving a true-crime podcaster and her coverage of a rape trial in a North Carolina town. Desz and LaVoy ensure that Rachel Krall and her podcast unfold in an authentic manner that depicts her as powerful and tenacious." —AudioFile on The Night Swim

"A gripping story that is equal parts shocking, unnerving, and thrilling. Goldin takes the ‘true crime’ trope to new and unexpected territory.” —Karin Slaughter,
New York Times and #1 international bestselling author of Girl, Forgotten

Rachel Krall, the true crime podcaster star of Megan Goldin’s acclaimed The Night Swim, returns to search for a popular influencer who disappears after visiting a suspected serial killer.

Terence Bailey is about to be released from prison for breaking and entering, though investigators have long suspected him in the murders of six women. As his release date approaches, Bailey gets a surprise visit from Maddison Logan, a hot, young influencer with a huge social media following. Hours later, Maddison disappears, and police suspect she’s been kidnapped—or worse. Is Maddison’s disappearance connected to her visit to Bailey? And why was she visiting him in the first place?

When they hit a wall in the investigation, the FBI reluctantly asks for Rachel Krall’s help in finding the missing influencer. Maddison seems to only exist on social media; she has no family, no friends, and other than in her posts, most people have never seen her. Who is she, really? Using a fake Instagram account, Rachel goes undercover to BuzzCon, a popular influencer conference, where she discovers a world of fierce rivalry that may have turned lethal.

When police find the body of a woman with a tattoo of a snake eating its tail—identical to a tattoo Rachel had seen on Bailey’s hand—the FBI must consider a chilling possibility: Bailey has an accomplice on the outside and a dangerous obsession with influencers, including Rachel Krall herself. Suddenly the target of a monster hiding in plain sight, Rachel is forced to confront the very real dangers that lurk in the dark corners of the internet.

Critic reviews

"A gripping story that is equal parts shocking, unnerving, and thrilling. Goldin takes the ‘true crime’ trope to new and unexpected territory.”—Karin Slaughter, New York Times and #1 international bestselling author of Girl, Forgotten

The Night Swim was quite a good novel, but this one is more complex, more frightening. Goldin keeps readers on their toes, offering tantalizing clues to what’s really going on but keeping the truth a closely-guarded secret until it’s time to reveal it. A third Rachel Krall novel would be most welcome.”—Booklist

Good Book

I loved the first book in this series and I really really loved The Escape Room. I didn't think this one was quite as riveting, but still deserves the 5 stars and worth listening to for sure.

8/10

Not as good as the first but still worth the credit. This is my 2nd book by this author and I think I’m gonna run down the rabbit hole comfortably with her

Love!

This was a great book. I loved the first in the series so I was a little nervous going into this one. I was worried that it wouldn’t pull me in like the first one did. I could not have been more wrong. Absolutely loved it!

A solid page-turner that works best via audiobook

Rachel Krall, host of the popular true crime podcast Guilty or Not Guilty, is summoned by the FBI to talk with a suspected murderer. Terence Bailey, who is set to be released from prison in two days. Special Agent Joe Martinez suspects that Bailey is involved in the disappearance of a famous influencer named Maddison Logan. Martinez hopes that Rachel can get Bailey to give some insight into what happened to Maddison, but he is a brick wall of silence and suspicion. In a missing person's case, finding the victim as quickly as possible is crucial to their survival. Can Rachel find Maddison before time runs out?

I want to start by saying that I did not know that Megan Godin was going to give us more Rachel Krall. I wholeheartedly enjoyed Night Swim, so when I heard about Dark Corners, this book was an auto-buy for me. Did Dark Corners make me regret that hasty decision? Not at all. I was hooked from cover to cover. I enjoyed the investigation and the sections of the novel that are part of Rachel's podcast-the Rachel Krall Special Report.

I do want to caution potential readers that you already know one key villain in the novel early on. You get chapters from his perspective, and I always enjoy when you get to spend time in the villain's head. This particular character made me think a little of the villain in Thomas Harris' book Red Dragon, though not as sympathetic or fleshed out. Still you get insight into the villain's past, how he operates, and what makes him tick, which is fascinating. Despite knowing this detail, there are still plenty of mysteries to unravel.

For those who enjoy following the perspective of the detective character, you also get inside the head of Agent Martinez. Martinez, in fact, brings me to the one thing that I did not enjoy about this novel, and that is a rote and unnecessary romance. Other than that, I was along for the ride. I know other reviewers did not enjoy the deep dive into influencer culture, but, though I don't have any interest in influencers, I still enjoyed learning about that culture. There is some social commentary present in the chapters involving influencers, but I did not feel that the commentary was heavy-handed or cruel.

I know not everyone enjoys audiobooks, but I highly recommend the audiobook for Dark Corners. The podcast sections of the audiobook sound exactly like listening to a podcast. I can't wait to see what adventure Megan Goldin takes Rachel Krall on next.

Good listen

Definitely worth a listen! Initially I wasn’t sure how I felt but this one definitely took me along a ride! The best character yet was the one with the smell this enticed me to keep reading, and just when I thought I knew the ending of course it was different than expected! Love the different characters and their voices!

Great characters

Story was very good. Wish performance would utilize male performers for male voices and female performers for female voices.

Mostly good

I'm struggling with how I feel with this one. The story was mostly intriguing, the narrator was ok, but there were things that just didn't work, including the ending. I tried my best to think of this story as a fictional crime-drama, something that would most likely make its way to Netflix, but in the end, I just felt it failed in the end. It had so much potential and almost appeared like whoever chose to edit the story made changes to be less shocking and more "appealing" to a certain audience in order to gain more readers
