About this listen

The world has descended into chaos, but it isn't the undead that are the worst part. Panic, broken supply lines, disrupted communications, terrorized refugees, the friction and fog of war all combine to make hell on Earth.

The battered men and women of America's storied First Infantry Division, based out of Fort Riley Kansas, are ordered to give up their fights in the cities and retreat towards to the National Redoubt in the Northwest. With ammunition, food, and fuel running low and a soul searing death only a bite away, they start a fighting retreat across the plains. In the way are armed gangs, undead hordes, incompetent leadership, and a landscape irrevocably changed.

This is the followup to Shane Gries' breakthrough best-selling The Thin Dead Line and is set in the world of J.F. Holmes' Irregular Scout Team One.

good book

if I had to choose which book I think is better Id choose the first one because of the ending of the second book. I dont see the main character staying. I'd like to see his lie come out and see how that cluster fuck plays out.

Another excellent continuation.

Thanks for releasing this audiobook on my birthday, it was the best present I could get. I was surprised by the continued quality and pacing of the story, and I cannot wait to see where the story takes the cast next

Gries Brings It, Again!

Another really good book by Shane Gries. Plenty of action, lots of plot twists and turns, relatable characters, well written and he definitely knows military culture top to bottom. His undead are fast and frightening. If you enjoy military thrillers, this is a great follow on to the first book in this series.

A little weaker than the last one, but still good.

This one seemed to lose a little steam. My main complaints were the abundance of scenes where things were explained to other characters. Alot of stuff had to be covered for the plot but the device of one character explaining to others why something was happening/why something had to happen this way/ why things are the way they are were a bit too frequent and similar in tone, if that makes sense. The main character also had a habit of saying one thing a few times and doing others once or twice, such as explaining he always took his guns everywhere, then missing it in one situation.

That situation was understandable as he was under alot of stress and fear and gosh knows i'd have left everything behind too. It still felt a little odd given the emphasis on the taking the guns everywhere. That and some characters from the first book have slipped into the background for things to focus more on the military personnel. One of my favorite parts of the last book was the people from different walks of life all getting together and having a share of the spotlight.

Getting that out of the way the book still keeps its action, fun characters and plot-line rolling at a darn good pace! The narrator remains pretty good and i was so thoroughly invested that i listened to the whole thing in a rather short time. I think my gripes are so detailed *because* i spent so little time zooming through this book so they are fresher to mind. Seriously, if you are a fan of zombies and have seen as much of the genre as i have i cant say that these books aren't a good time and a relatively fresh take on a staple of the genre. The military aspects neither overstay their welcome nor feel like the author is trying to flex his knowledge about all things gun gear and grunts.

Loved all of it, book 1 was great this was even better

I loved the narration the more candid and realistic human and military decisions that weren’t cartoony like TWD or other zombie genres but not too kitted up tactical like others.

I love the layup of the fallings and pros of the US military industrial complex at work and organization how it adapts and fails to adapt to the zombie apocalypse while also interesting balance of zombie threat without being too weak or overwhelming at times based on scenarios

I am very much excited for the next installment and sad I finished so quick
