About this listen

It’s vampire politics as usual around the town of Bon Temps, but never before have they hit so close to Sookie’s heart….

Growing up with telepathic abilities, Sookie Stackhouse realized early on there were things she'd rather not know. And now that she's an adult, she also realizes that some things that she knows about, she'd rather not see—like Eric Northman feeding off another woman. A younger one.

There's a thing or two she'd like to say about that, but she has to keep quiet—Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), is in town. It’s the worst possible time for a human body to show up in Eric's front yard—especially the body of the woman whose blood he just drank.

Now, it's up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl's fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who's set out to make Sookie's world come crashing down.

Reliably entertaining

At this point, I'm as happy to read about Sookie making a casserole for her friend with a new baby as anything else. It's a lot like visiting an old friend. Some long-running story lines get wrapped up in fairly satisfying ways and there's the usual humor, which is so well handled by Johanna Parker. The Sookie-Eric relationship never seemed that tenable to me, so I'm happy to see that Harris is handling their problems realistically. And I like that Sookie is becoming more than "just a waitress" because she could use some more financial and career security.

While I can understand why some long-time listeners are bothered that there isn't more drama or action, I actually think this book is far more fulfilling on that level than the one before. It's not very steamy, though, if that's an issue for you. To me, this is the ultimate comfort listen, and with the exception of the opening scene in a ladies-night strip club (tacky), I found it really pleasing no matter what was going on.

Kind of disappointed in Deadlocked

First off I am a huge fan of the other Sookie Stachouse books.I have been waiting for this book to come out for a long time so that may be the source of part of my disappointment. I feel like Charlaine Harris should have spent another year working on "Deadlocked" because it seems like at least 85% of the book is a recap of everything that went on in all the other books. This book is almost like a very short story with all the other books wrapped around it. ..doesn't feel like the author put much thought in it at all. Not much plot, Sookie is not as spunky as she is in the other books and there is not very much action in it all. Most of the favorite characters are out of town for a good deal of the book as well.

I think the saving feature in Deadlocked is the narrator Johanna Parker. She has such a charming voice and she really does a wonderful job at making all the characters different. I think I would like to see how she does at other non-Sookie books.

will sookie ever be out of trouble

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to anyone who has read the series ...I finally got answers about Dermot and her granddad

What other book might you compare Deadlocked to and why?

I really don't think there's to many books you can compare this book to.

Which scene was your favorite?

I absolutely loved it when sookie walked In on Eric feeding....that girl put him in his place real quick.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I must say that I do lug charlaine Harris sookie books ...but you will find they are more like soap operas so you get the predictability from them.

Any additional comments?

I think this audio book is worth the listen

Another very good Sookie Story

If you could sum up Deadlocked in three words, what would they be?

I was worried that with "True Blood" the timber and pace of the Sookie stories would change. Nope. They are nicely verbose and laid back.
Another Excellent story that is a delight to listen to.
Keep up the GREAT work, Charlaine.

Another fabulous Sookie book

What did you love best about Deadlocked?

This book was full of surprises. Fans of Sookie will find a lot of loose ends are settled and new doors are opened.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Deadlocked?

What she does with the Cluvial Door.

Have you listened to any of Johanna Parker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to them all and this is a great listen. They are usually very ejoyable to listen to, and this is no exception.

If you could rename Deadlocked, what would you call it?

Hmmm. Possible "Checkmate"

Any additional comments?

Great read, great listen, highly recommend.

Oh Sookie!

Would you consider the audio edition of Deadlocked to be better than the print version?

Love the audio version! Johanna Parker is amazing!

What other book might you compare Deadlocked to and why?

I would compare it the early books. Sookie is changing on the inside. It's another big crossroads for Sookie.

Which scene was your favorite?

The girls at the strip club and the birthday surprise!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me almost cry. Harris almost gave me heart attack!

Any additional comments?

Can't believe it is ending. Only one more book in the series!

Lower key, yet still satisfying

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The narrator, Johanna Parker, is fantastic. She really captures Sookie. Her portrayal of the other characters is fantastic as well.

Many of the reviews I've read of the text version are down on the book because it's not as sexy or as funny as previous ones, but I think Harris is just trying to prepare us for the next book, which will be the last in the series.

Parker's narration keeps the story moving.

What does Johanna Parker bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

The accent! :-) And Sookie's emotions.

Not the best, but....

I agree with other reviewers that this was not the best Sookie novel, but I don't agree with how bad they reviewed it. It was alot of Sookie talking to herself/day-dreaming/thinking but that is who she is so you can't really knock her for it. I don't really understand all the other reviews complaining about Sookie going to Taco Bell, she only goes once and she is a some-what normal everyday person, she does eat food, she went to Taco Bell -- so what - get over it. I liked the fact that there was a storyline regarding the others in the town, not just all Sookie, we've heard so much about the others so having their stories in this book keeps the storyline going and not just leave us hanging on what happened to those we have come to know through Sookie. No there wasn't as much action in this book as there were in some of the others but there was enough action to keep the book moving. I wasn't bored with the book, but i wasn't setting on the edge of my seat. None of the Sookie novels have ever left me setting on the edge of my seat; they are just easy books to listen and follow along with that are very entertaining.

Charlaine Harris again doesn't disappoint

What did you love best about Deadlocked?

I love the voice of Johanna Parker. The audio had a multiple story line all going on at the same time. Then as always the stories are concluded by the end of the book.
