About this listen

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From Ali Wong, star of the Netflix original series Beef, a “refreshing, hilarious, and honest account of making a career in a male-dominated field, dating, being a mom, growing up, and so much more” (Bustle) through heartfelt and wickedly funny letters to her daughters

Ali Wong is one of
Time’s 100 Most Influential People of the Year • “Knife-sharp . . . a genuine pleasure.”—The New York Times

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, Variety, Chicago Tribune, Glamour, New York

In her hit Netflix comedy special Baby Cobra, an eight-month pregnant Ali Wong resonated so strongly that she even became a popular Halloween costume. Wong told the world her remarkably unfiltered thoughts on marriage, sex, Asian culture, working women, and why you never see new mom comics on stage but you sure see plenty of new dads.

The sharp insights and humor are even more personal in this completely original collection. She shares the wisdom she’s learned from a life in comedy and reveals stories from her life off stage, including the brutal single life in New York (i.e. the inevitable confrontation with erectile dysfunction), reconnecting with her roots (and drinking snake blood) in Vietnam, tales of being a wild child growing up in San Francisco, and parenting war stories. Though addressed to her daughters, Ali Wong’s letters are absurdly funny, surprisingly moving, and enlightening (and gross) for all.

Critic reviews

“[Wong] spins a volume whose pages simultaneously shock and satisfy. . . . Dear Girls is not so much a real-talk handbook as it is a myth-puncturing manifesto.”—Vogue

“[A] refreshing, hilarious, and honest account of making a career in a male-dominated field, dating, being a mom, growing up, and so much more. . . . Yes, this book is addressed to Wong’s daughters, but every reader will find nuggets of wisdom and inspiration and, most important, something to laugh at.”Bustle

“Absurdly funny.”Parade

More love for Ali Wong

I thought that Ali Wong was funny, but this book makes her real. She is so insiteful, vulnerable with a funny delivery that I had my teenage son listen to some of the chapters (skipping over parts obviously not meant for teens to hear), which helps him, my little suburbanite, to understand me better as a SF native with the struggles of being different.

I loved this

I laughed so hard at many places and related to her in so many ways. As a mother of 3 I understood her parenting talk as well as just trying to make it . Definitely a great audiobook

Uneven but Funny Comedy Memoir

3.5 Stars. I liked this book a lot but I didn't love it. Usually, I find that comedians do a great job of narrating their own audiobooks -- I mean, they are seasoned stage orators -- but in this case, Ali came off pretty stiff in her delivery. I think she's one of those stand-up comedians who is a magnetic stage performer but a meh reader. Anyway, there was a lot of hilarious material in here and as a woman and a mom I related to and found great humor in a lot of her vignettes. I know she is known for being raunchy, but I do think if you say the same dirty words over and over and over again, they lose their emotional impact, and what starts off hilariously shocking can become repetitive and even boring. But overall, I really enjoyed it. It was a really easy book to listen to while I was getting things done around my house, and that is exactly what I like humor memoirs for.

Real, raunchy, hysterical, and moving

I'm obsessed with this woman. She makes me proud to be an Asian American! If you liked her Netflix stand-up specials, those were just brushing the surface of Ali Wong.

Ali does another standup job!

Ali as always as one of the funniest comedians I've ever heard. Her love for her two daughters and her husband Justin are definitely felt through out this book.

Daddys letter made me cry

Great form of Autobiography and pieces of advice written for their daughters. I imagine listening to it narrated by Ali would be funnier than reading it. You can hear it told in her voice.
