Der Tod seines Vaters hat im Leben des kleinen amerikanischen Jungen Cedrik Errol eine große Lücke hinterlassen. Auch seine Mutter ist nicht mehr die fröhliche Frau, die er früher gekannt hat, und allein schon die Erwähnung seines Vaters treibt ihr die Tränen in die Augen. Mutter und Sohn leben sehr bescheiden in New York, als der Rechtsanwalt Havisham sie mit der unverhofften Nachricht überrascht, dass Ceddie künftig der Erbe eines Grafentitels - Earl of Dorincourt - und eines riesigen Vermögens sein wird.
Zwei Brüder seines Vaters sind kinderlos verstorben, so dass der alte Earl nun den Sprössling seines dritten Sohnes, den er wegen seiner amerikanischen Heirat verstoßen hatte, anerkennen und auf seine künftige Rolle vorbereiten muss. Die Sache hat jedoch einen Haken: Ceddie muss nun seine Freunde in Amerika verlassen und in England bei seinem Großvater leben, einem verbitterten alten Mann, der alles andere als umgänglich ist.
Zudem darf seine Mutter ihn zwar begleiten, jedoch nicht mit Ceddie auf Schloss Dorincourt leben, sondern muss sich mit einer Wohnung im Dorf begnügen. In England eingetroffen, gewinnt Ceddie durch seine zugleich gewitzte wie mitfühlend freundliche Art bald die Herzen aller - von den Dienstboten bis hin zu seinem griesgrämigen Großvater, der den Erben zunächst sehr skeptisch empfangen hat. Das Glück aller wird jedoch in Frage gestellt, als nun die Witwe des ältesten Grafensohnes auftaucht und einen Sohn präsentiert, der statt Ceddie der eigentliche Erbe sein soll...
Der berühmte Klassiker der internationalen Kinderliteratur nun in einem packenden, mit viel Liebe gelesenen Hörbuch für Jung und Alt! Wer kennt nicht Filme wie "Der geheime Garten", "Der kleine Lord" oder "Sarah, die kleine Prinzessin"?
Grundlage hierfür waren Bücher der fantastischen Kindebuchautorin Frances Hodgson Burnett, die noch heute Klein und Groß bezaubern. Die Autorin wurde am 24. November 1849 in Manchester unter dem Namen Frances Eliza Hodgson geboren. Sie arbeitete bei der Zeitung, heiratete und bekam zwei Söhne. Danach trennte sie sich jedoch von ihrem Mann und heiratete Stephen Townsend, der zwei Jahre darauf verstarb. Die weltberühmte Autorin verstarb am 29. 10. 1924.
