About the Creator

Larry Correia is The New York Times best-selling author of the Monster Hunter International urban fantasy series, the Grimnoir Chronicles alternate history trilogy, the Dragon Award winning Saga of the Forgotten Warrior epic fantasy series, the Dead Six thrillers (with Mike Kupari), and novels set in the Warmachine game universe. He has also published a great deal of short fiction, which is now compiled in Target Rich Environment, volumes one and two, and is the co-editor (along with Kacey Ezell) of the Noir Fatale anthology. A former accountant, military contractor, machinegun dealer, and firearms instructor, Larry is now a full time writer. He lives in Yard Moose Mountain, Utah with his very patient wife and children.

Full cast, sound effects people, and good dialogue. A couple of times the action was hard to follow, but still worth the listen.
Be aware the main character is voiced by a different reader. He is fine. You will get used to him quickly.

Cheesy but a good 1950s Radio show.

This is a short book but has plenty of the Correlation touch in it! Supernatural abilities, witty banter, this one had an old PI feel except the world has magic. A fun story that kept me interested and glad to have picked this book!

Another great paranormal mystery!

It was like they hired the cheapest voice actors they could find. Bad special effects and everything. Would have been better as just an audiobook versus a cheap radio play.

OK story, but what was up with the performance?

Am I the only one that finds the "full cast" acted audibles a little distracting and annoying? If you have a great performer who has mastery of their voice, then you don't need the extra sound effects and bumper music for the scene changes. And really, it seems like a travesty to NOT have Bronson Pinchot playing the voice of Jake Sullivan. It was just not the same.

I'm accustomed to Jake being short on words and a heavy thinker. The story is very good but Jake is very chatty. Any fa. of Grimnoire should definitely check it out.

This is a prequel to the series? It's not as good as the rest of the series, both in writing and in performance. But, still manages to be better than some recent Sci-Fi/Fantasy audio duds by other writers.

Not as great as the rest of the Grimnoir series

A poor adaptation from a series normally full of detail and strong characterisation amongst it's cast, it's hard for me to decide where exactly this production misses it's mark.

Lackluster voice performances from most of the actors with poor sound design to convey action and provide background details that would otherwise be described in either a narration or internal monologue left me confused at times as to what was supposed to be happening until the action was already resolved.

As for the actual story it is concise and the proper length for a radio style drama piece, but a derivative plot and lack of content that would expand on the story of the Grimnoir series make this presentation a questionable purchase and even more questionable production.

All that being said it'll get you through an hour or so and can be entertaining in a mystery science theater sort of way but not something to waste a full credit on, just throw a few bucks at it if you absolutely have to have it. Instead use that credit to pick up one of the books from the actual series this presentation is based on; Hard Magic, Spellbound, and Warbound.
