About this listen
The Dark Planet Saga is an epic, five-part science-fiction saga following Professor Edmunds on his rollercoaster interstellar journey to "The Dark Planet", a tidally locked world located in the distant regions of our galaxy divided into two polar halves—The Light and The Dark.
On The Dark Planet, Professor Edmunds discovers that, for everyone on Earth, there is another you—an “Other” you—on The Dark Planet.
For Edmunds, a bitter, brilliant man whose wife died in a tragic car crash ten years ago, the discovery of The Dark Planet is not only proof of humanity’s eternal existence—it is a chance to see his wife again.
When Edmunds and his expeditionary crew touch down on The Dark Planet, they discover that the aliens on The Dark Planet do not only look like us… They are us.
Edmunds, his delinquent son, Ford, and the band of Wyand Corp. cyborgs (half-human, half-robotic beings with unknown, ulterior motives) crash on the dreaded Island in The Water, the great sea which separates the two worlds within this world.
Edmunds meets his own Other, the Other of his dead wife, and his son’s Other—Kal—a boy hellbent on saving himself, his mother, and leading his people out of The Dark and into the promised land of The Light across The Water.
Their ship destroyed, Edmunds and company are forced to fight for their lives against the undead Islanders and the nameless, nefarious secrets of The Island.
Edmunds and company must uncover the sinister secrets of The Island, unravel The Dark Planet’s mysterious cosmic connections to Earth, and take sides in the age-old civilizational conflict between the oppressed people of The Dark and the opulent elite of The Light in this thrilling sci-fi showdown of galactic proportions.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

I thought hiring an alien transport to get me off Earth would be the end of my problems, not the start of them. But that’s exactly what happens when my original pilot is a no-show, and the new one considers himself an expert on humans and is more familiar with me than I’d prefer. Hsinth wants something, but I’m not sure that in my pants is it. When our ship crashes in the snow-strewn wasteland of an ancient battleground and pushes my carefully constructed plans off-course, most of my patience goes out the iced-over window.

Helliconia follows an eccentric orbit around a double-star system with a twenty-six-hundred-year cycle of very long seasons. As spring slowly breaks the brutally long winter, humans emerge from hiding and a long sequence of civilization and growth begins to repeat again, unbeknownst to the participants but watched by an orbiting satellite station, Avernus, created by Earth some centuries ago. Humans free themselves from slavery to the aboriginal Phagors, and religion and science flower and expand.

Unique Story Setup for a Larger Adventure
This is a unique story that focuses on the characters and not the science. The idea that there are "others" or copies of yourself on two different planets. It's an interesting concept that doesn't dwell on or even attempt to explain the science. A suspension of belief is needed to appreciate the story at times and this didn't bother me - I just needed to reel my mind back from overthinking.
As the first novel in a planned 5 part series there is a lot of focus on world building and character development. It's mainly setup to bring the characters together for what will be resolved over the course of the series.
The performance was solid with distinct voices for each of the characters - even the "others" had different voices due to their life circumstances. My typical playback speed is 1.5, however for this book I listened at 1.7.

Thrilling Sci Fi Advernture!
This audiobook took me on an unforgettable journey into a world unlike any I’ve imagined, and I have imagined a few. The Dark Planet Saga is more than just an epic sci-fi adventure—it’s a mind-bending exploration of identity, fate, and the mysteries of the universe.
You quickly get caught up in the characters, as they are so well presented and deeply engaging. Professor Edmunds is a fascinating character, grappling with grief and the impossible discovery that every person on Earth has an “Other” on this strange, divided planet. The way the story weaves personal struggles with high-stakes survival is gripping. The alien world feels alive, and the clash between The Light and The Dark adds depth to the adventure.
The narration is spot-on, making each character feel distinct, and the suspense keeps you hooked. Whether you love deep sci-fi concepts or just a great, action-packed story, this one delivers. If you’re looking for a thrilling audiobook that keeps you thinking long after it’s over, The Dark Planet Saga is a must-listen.
