About this listen

It can be hard for those of us living in the 21st century to see how 14th-century Buddhist teachings still apply. When you’re trying to figure out which cell phone plan to buy or brooding about something someone wrote about you on Facebook, lines like "While the enemy of your own anger is unsubdued, though you conquer external foes, they will only increase" can seem a little obscure. Thubten Chodron’s illuminating explication of Togmay Zangpo’s revered text, The Thirty-Seven Practices of Bodhisattvas, doesn’t just explain its profound meaning; in dozens of passages she lets her students and colleagues share first-person stories of the ways that its teachings have changed their lives. Some bear witness to dramatic transformations - making friends with an enemy prisoner-of-war, finding peace after the murder of a loved one - while others tell of smaller lessons, like waiting for something to happen or coping with a minor injury.

Pretty good

This gave a very thorough perspective of Buddhism. Lots to ponder on. What Makes You Not a Buddhist jived a little better with me, but I still appreciated most of the lessons this one had to offer.

Really great

The venerable teacher uses wise real-life vignettes of people's real world situations and how they relate to dharma practice-- dharma as medicine.

Good intro to Buddhist teachings

I thought that this was a good introduction to Buddhist teachings. There was enough depth to make me feel like I was learning but not so much to make me feel overwhelmed or bogged down with information.

great...now i want to be a monk 😒

Read without pretentious verbiage, seems like it's written with good intentions. Sheds light on practices and philosophies that would otherwise be worlds away. Very clear and simple language the reader has a great voice for conveying it's message. It's one book in my library that's worth every penny.

Wise book!

Very wise book from a great teacher, American Buddhist nun Thubten Chodron. However, I am disappointed that the narrator is a British sounding man, which seems an odd choice. At least, for this listener, it was distracting.
