Publisher's summary

That ornery but oh-so-handsome charming, and somewhat, wayward angel Detective Bobby Starr has returned. This time, he’s back to fulfill his third and, hopefully, his final requirement to get into Saint Peter's prestigious Guardian Angel Squad. This time, the usually reluctant time traveler, Alexa Owl, is ready to go back to the 1960s to assist in solving one more long-ago murder. Why? Because if all goes well, she'll be rid of the menacing angel once and for all. Except, an emergency jerks Alexa back to her own time, and to complicate matters, she’s got a tag-along. Can Bobby solve this last case without Alexa’s help? After all, she’s got her hands full with a life-or-death mystery in the 21st century!

Fun Cozy!

I love to revisit Alexa and P.I. Bobby's banter in their time slip travels. I never get tired of her Irish friend's toasts. The narrator is splendid and does a wonderful job with each character and accent. This book starts a bit differently as we see the villains discuss their upcoming murder. It's a very entertaining and quick, cozy read. I love the author's comparisons between the 1960s and the present day. Not just in the obvious, like landlines vs cell phones, but funny details like salespeople going door to door selling encyclopedias. Does it date me to say that my family once bought a set from a solicitor once upon a time? I love the twist she added of a 1963 character crossing to the present-day.

Cute cozy mystery to listen to

Double Dog Dare

The Owl's Nest Mysteries #3
By C.S. McDonald
Read by Maren Swenson Waxenberg

Detective Bobby Starr is back and Alexa is about to be pulled into another unsolved cold case from Bobby's past. But this time, everything is different. First off, they are given five days rather than three to solve the case. And the potential suspect has two potential murders tied to his name. And if Bobby can solve this case, he'll be part of Saint Peter’s Guardian Angel Squad. And Alexa is more than ready to have Bobby out of her life.

But when Alexa is suddenly thrown back into the future, her feelings of unease are explained. Worse she's brought a tag-along from the past with her, and that's in addition to the always slumbering Bassett Hound that has somehow made its way into her home. Soon Alexa is caught up in her contemporary troubles while Bobby continues working on his murder case from 1963.

Double Dog Dare offers a change-up to the previous cases that Saint Pete has sent this sleuthing duo on. The unexpected twists find Bobby and Alexa working hard to find answers to different questions this time. As always, this book is a fun and entertaining escape from this reader's day-to-day. It is written so a reader new to the series could easily pick this up and enjoy it as a standalone title. And then there is a particularly amusing scene with a Roomba, you have to read it to fully enjoy it! This a contemporary read that is a cozy mystery that as well as magical realism with a touch of romance. The book is just over seven and a half hours, making it a perfect afternoon/evening commute listen. The narration by Maren Swenson Waxenberg is well done, the pacing is good, and provides an excellent version of this book.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion - All thoughts expressed are my own.

Cute!

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.

This is the third book in the Owl’s Nest Mysteries. I had read the first two books and enjoyed them, so I was glad to read this one. I’m glad I did because it’s my favorite.

Detective Bobby Starr is an interesting character, particularly since he’s dead. He wants to be part of an elite group of angels but in order to be in it, St. Peter wants him to prove he’s worthy by resolving some cases that he didn’t have a chance to finish when he was alive. This is the third case he needs to solve, and it’s supposed to be the last one. For a reason neither knows, Alexa is supposed to help him.

I like the main character, Alexa. She’s an independent and brave woman who owns her own business. I found it interesting how she just takes everything in stride: ghost, ghost cat, ghost dog, time travel…no biggie! When her boyfriend is kidnapped, she can’t leave finding him to the detective on the case. Now she has two cases to worry about!

I liked the ending of Double Dog Dare. Everything came together after a few twists, and Alexa said goodbye to Bobby. I’m hoping that something comes up and that he needs her help again in the future. This is a short but fun (and funny) mystery that I enjoyed.

Always love C.S. McDonald enjoyed the audiobook

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Double Dog Dare is the conclusion to C.S. McDonald’s The Owls Nest Series. Again we meet Alexa and Bobby as they try solving Mysteries. There is some time travel going on as they go back to the 1960’s and then return to the current time. I did enjoy the trip back to the 1960’s and the details given of this era. I always find humor in McDonald’s books and this one is no different.

I so much enjoyed this audiobook version of Double Dog Dare by C.S. McDonald. It was refreshing listening to the story as the wonderful Narrator read the book. Ms. Waxenberg’s voice is one that is pleasant to listen to and I never tired of hearing it. Some of the unique voices for characters didn’t come out as well as others, but all in all it was really awesome. I encourage you to try this audiobook of Double Dog Dare. I think you will enjoy this wonderful cozy mystery
