About this listen
Convinced that two unexplained deaths on her London patch are murders, rookie police officer Heather Prendergast’s unofficial investigation takes her to an isolated mill town on the Huddshire moors where she unearths a web of corruption that threatens her career – and her life.
A dyed in the wool Southerner, Heather discovers that the isolated mill town is a throwback to another age - the personal fiefdom of a crooked Mayor Cameron Carmichael in league with a corrupt police force led by Chief Constable Euridice Montefiore. During the course of an amateurish and accident-strewn undercover investigation, her life is threatened, she attracts the amorous attentions of local newspaper photographer, Naff, and is arrested on fabricated charges of prostitution and possession of drugs.

Armed with only the clothes on their backs and zero survival skills, they fight to overcome hunger, thirst, deadly wildlife—and most terrifyingly—decades of accrued resentment. Story
Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Story
A bad best man’s speech can ruin a wedding. Why do we plan every detail of a perfect day and then give the groom’s idiot best friend five minutes of total power? Enter Nate (Glen Powell), a speechwriter-for-hire who helps people write incredible best man speeches. To keep the best man from embarrassing himself (and the newlyweds), Nate uses his list of don’ts: Don’t mention the exes, don’t be rated R, and don’t bum everyone out. Nate’s system never fails. That is, until he meets Dan (Nicholas Braun).

Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness. Story
Alice's journey begins as all good journeys do: hitting on the sales guy at REI. After a tumultuous breakup, a quick career transition, family upheaval, and a sobriety journey that didn't fix her life quite as much as she expected it to, Alice decides that the only way to solve all her problems is to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. But as she begins preparing for the months-long quest, she realizes the answers she's seeking might not be on top of a snow-covered mountain. Especially since she just learned there was snow in California.

Campbell Flynn, art historian, professor, and fêted fixture of the literati, always knew that when his life came crashing down, it would happen in public—yet he never imagined that a single year in London would expose so much. He’s never taken other people half as seriously as they take themselves, which is the first of his mistakes. The second is a new project: opportunistic and precisely calibrated to rake in a fortune.

Writer Jessica Pan intends to find out. With the help of various extrovert mentors, Jessica sets up a series of personal challenges (talk to strangers, perform stand-up comedy, host a dinner party, travel alone, make friends on the road, and much, much worse) to explore whether living like an extrovert can teach her lessons that might improve the quality of her life.

Great Mystery
Metropolitan Police Officer, Heather Pendergast, a rookie police officer, begins her role with an eagerness that unsettles the more seasoned officers and administration. Reassigned to a small, isolated mill town, with old fashioned mannerism and beliefs, she continues to refuse to accept things at face value and chooses to investigate on her own. Joined by the deceased’s daughter who is searching for her own answers, the mystery deepens.
The author, Em Thompson crafts a British mystery infused with humor and satire in the dialogue, characters, and action. The dialogue is rich and authentic. Thompson is gifted with the ability to phrase words together that are both catchy and which enhances the narrative. Each character is well-developed and crucial to the storyline. The plot twists are unexpected and rich furthering the richness of this narrative.
The narrator, Billie Fulford Brown, delivers a powerful performance that elevates the narrative with purposeful intonation and deliberate delivery. She speaks clearly and smoothly. She skillfully conveys each character’s personality through her voice.
This is an intriguing book that features a captivating mystery, enjoyable characters and a rich use of vocabulary.
There were no issues with the quality or production of this audiobook.
