Publisher's summary

Dr. Peter Chesterfield is the top neurosurgeon at the Royal London Hospital. He’s also a workaholic, and after a blow-up with a colleague, his boss orders him to attend a medical symposium at the luxurious Elysium Grand on the island of Maui.

During a midnight walk on the beach, Peter pulls a woman with a skull fracture from the water. Despite all his skill, she dies in his arms, leaving him with only one clue to what happened to her: the word “honu.”

Obsessed with finding the cause of his patient’s death—discovering what or who ripped the power over life and death from his surgeon hands—Peter becomes entangled in an ongoing investigation. He also becomes a source of deep irritation to detective Lisa Kealoha, who has jurisdiction over the case.

The reluctant pair join forces, diving deep into Maui’s evolving gang culture, and unearth a conspiracy that runs deeper than either could have imagined. Knowing too much is deadly—and they must catch the killer before the killer catches them.

James Hannibal comes through again.

James Hannibal brought together a well researched exciting story with the right combination of suspense, intrigue, and faith. As a Christian writer, I appreciate the example of presenting faith in the midst of the story without being preachy. The characters were believable and interesting.

Thanks for another great novel.

Definitely a different take on murder mystery.

I like the combination of a logically thinking neurosurgeon and a smart Detective. it sounded unusual at first and that's why I bought it. definitely worth listening!

I refuse to believe this

The author really wants me to think a man who served a tour in Afghanistan, as a medic, came out the other side not knowing what someone means when they say they found their Father? Nearly four chapters of an otherwise fairly great detective story were dedicated to proselytizing. Like, I'm sorry, you've got an LA based clearly Hispanic gang leader who would also very likely be raised Catholic, but his religion isn't even mentioned while you've got 3 other "good" guys jamming their Faith down the male protagonist's throat every time he gets in range and -and- he's acting like an atheist from a Jack Chick tract who has never heard of an afterlife or heaven or all the other "perks" of believing, like people who don't believe somehow grew up in predominantly Christian demographics with goggles that blocked all religious imagery from their view until some rando came up to them and prayed at them to "save" them.

Ugh. Spare me.

Couldn't finish the Audible book

I purchased this book when I found out it was up for an award. I do audio books because of my busy life, and perhaps if I had ordered the book itself I would not have been so distracted with all the accents. Most of the book was narrated with a British accent, despite the fact that most of the points of view were not British, but rather American/Hawaiian. It felt almost like an omniscient point of view because of that. There were many point-of-view characters, which made the Hawaiian, British, plain American, and Texan accents all the more difficult to keep up with.
I'm also not so much a whodunnit reader . . . which again, may be tainting my opinion. I'm sure if you like Whodunnits and you purchase the book itself, you will likely love the Hawaiian setting, the characters, and the plot.
