About this listen

After her good friend Godwin has a nasty quarrel with John, his significant other, full-time needlework shop owner and part-time sleuth Betsy Devonshire finds herself with a roommate. Betsy doesn't mind having company, though Godwin is restless and unhappy over the sudden break-up. But sadness turns to grief when Betsy and Godwin discover John dead in his home, and Godwin is arrested for the murder. Betsy knows her friend couldn't be the killer, and sets out to prove it. What she learns is that John had a cat's cradle of secret dealings that had made him a bundle of money, and a lot of enemies. Now, Betsy has to untangle a web of lies if she's going to save Godwin--and find the murderer.©2005 Mary Monica Kuhfeld (P)2008 BBC Audiobooks America Amateur Sleuths Cozy Detective Fiction Mystery Suspense Women Sleuths Women's Fiction Feel-Good Cats Suspense Detective

My only complaint

My only issue is that the narrator mispronounced all the city names.
I also wish there was more difference between voices.

Fan

Very that John didn’t leave Goddy anything more than he did, that was disappointing after the years they had been together. Ready for the next book.

Good, but bad pronouciation by the narrator

Love the books, but the narrator pronounces Aida cloth wrong and Wayzata wrong. I mean, really, do they do any research on pronouncing items? That might be a good thing to actually ask the author or someone familiar with the subject! Hmmmm

never saw it coming

Love the way these stories unfold. Took quite some time to put the clues together. Wonderful mystery.

Not impressed first time, loved it the second time

Well, this is odd. I already reviewed this book. I came back to this series to finish listening to it. I am an avid cross stitcher and listen to audiobooks whilst stitching. I didn't know exactly which book I read last and the description of this book didn't ring any bells. I had started further down in the series as this book was marked as finished. But ended up listening to it -again- as I just had no recollection of it. And I loved it. The murder story wasn't too impressive and it all wrapped up a little too quick all of a sudden, I could have done with a more developed ending, but I loved all the chitchat about the store that it didn't really matter. As it's light fare it didn't matter as it's the perfect book to listen to while stitching. Had I only been listening I wouldn't have liked it nearly as much. Many books are a little too complicated when stitching as I stitch very complex patterns that require a lot of my attention. Probably a good book for a car ride too. If you don't like stitching you probably won't like this series. If you're an addict like me it's so much appreciated that there finally is something for us (we have very limited merchandise in the box stores, generally there's floss and a few patterns and that's it) as we're a dying breed sadly enough. Most people just have no idea that there's so much out there online geared to younger people, that it's no longer just for old ladies. You would be amazed at what's being sold. In any event, I enjoyed this book.

Good cozy mystery

I may listen to this story again. I am a Jackie-of-all-crafters, and when I'm doing a long, rather boring job (spinning pounds of alpaca into yarn, for example), I like to listen to a pleasant-on-the-ears story that makes the tedium a little less...tedious. This book fits the bill. The characters are interesting and out-of-the-ordinary, and while the mystery plot is original and detailed, the ending is not, so while the cast of characters may not always do what you think they're going to do, the good guy always wins in the end. Ho hum, but OK if you're not going to give this book your full attention.
There are several things I like about Monica Ferris's stories, the first being that the main protagonist is a single woman of a certain age who is NOT slobbering over a man, but is instead focused on running her business and living her life. There are other core characters who are slightly formulaic but still interesting, and peripheral characters that vary from book to book vary greatly and give a unique and interesting twist to the story. I like that Ms. Ferris is willing to write outside of the box, which is why she is one of the few authors who I listen to over and over again.

Much better than the previous book

I liked this story much better than the previous book. The format of the story was the usual format and this time I could understand who was speaking. However, the narrator pronounces Betsy’s name as Devenshire with a strong i sound but the previous books specifically corrected that pronunciation as Devenshir with a short i sound as in her. I still don’t like how Godwin sounds. But the narrator sounds better this time.
