About this listen

After 100 years crossing the expanse, the generation starship Pioneer is nearly halfway to her destination. The horrors of her first few days in space have been erased by time and forgotten by the residents of the city nestled inside.

But all good things must come to an end.

Deputy Niko Nori finds that out the hard way. After a double homicide leads to a suspect who shouldn't exist, it isn't long before Pioneer's dark history catches up with the people of Metro, and Niko, in particular. With no time to waste and few people he can trust, the race is on to unravel the secrets of the past and bring the one person who can help into the present.

Somewhere beyond the locked seals of Metro, Joseph Cross is in hibernation. And if Niko can't reach him...there won't be a future.

Great series. Performance less good.

All of the books in this series are well written. The storyline is epic and tied into other related book series by this author. I have enjoyed the ensure family of books.

For this series, the audio book performer was good with his reading and different “voices”, but he failed in my opinion due to lack of doing his homework on the other voice actor that recorded dozens of prior books in the larger universe of the story.

This performer pronounced many common names (names of crossover characters, alien races, etc) quite differently than the original voice actor in the priori series. It would have been such an easy improvement to make if he had listened to just one of the prior books to ensure consistent pronunciation.

He also modified key character personalities in the way he acted out their lines. I will not mention the characters to avoid spoilers, but it was also disappointing to see the way the character was performed. It was very difficult to correlate the character being acted out in this series with the character I came to know well in the other series.

Easy fix next time? :)

don't let the new narrator de-rail immersion

the story itself is an outstanding addition to the forgotten universe. my only beef is with the narration.
the narrator technically does a great job- however his afflections and tone with dialogue is completely ill-suited to the kind of characters in these books.
marines come off as whistful, whiney, disinterested and weak even in the thick of things, and it is distracting and disconnecting.

which is surprising considering hes fantastic with all the *non-dialogue*.

overall i recommend the story- but in written format if you have the time...
if not? be prepared to take your time- it will take more effort to listen to than the first few series in the forgotten universe.
