Publisher's summary

The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. Nikolas has always liked art. You'd have thought that Ben and Nikolas would have learned that their romantic holidays inevitably end up as disasters. A short break on the polar ice sees them trapped in a nightmare of murder and deceit. Neither of them, however, foresees the long-term impact that endless winter has on their relationship. They return with a metaphorical darkness that threatens everything they have created together. Desperate and fearing for Nikolas' life, Ben makes a bargain with a surprising ally. For the first time, Nikolas meets an enemy more powerful than he is. But fortunately, not as sneaky...

Utter Perfection

I cannot get enough of Ben and Nikolas..
John Wiltshire is an amazing writer taking me into the lives of Ben and Nik and their extended family….
The Polar Ice setting was magnificent, all the scenes at Dartmoor being trapped by the snow were also magnificent.
Angst and heartbreak then so,I’d love and understanding.
This audiobook narration by Gary Furlong is out of this world.

Absolutely Haunting!

A vacation in the far north to see polar bears and the aurora—what could go wrong? Well, with Ben and Nik—you can count on this northern adventure going south drastically, with more death and havoc and just generally creepy vibes than anyone can imagine.

Gary Furlong does a fabulous reading of this incredible tale.

Great story. Great narration.

Soooo. This book was decidedly unsettling for a couple of reasons. The fact that it inspired some intense emotions, is a reflection of the author's skill. I actually had flashbacks to blizzards on the prairie. Anyone who has had the misfortune of experiencing negative twenty degrees below zero Farenheit with blowing snow on a seemingly endless prairie with few landmarks, can recognize how well Wiltshire portrayed Ben and Nikolas' latest vacation destination. Shudder.

The next unsettling subject was the reality of how mental health, religion, and personal relationships connect. Sometimes they blend smoothly, and sometimes they can collide with disastrous results.

While some of the events in previous books of the series have been resolved, there are still a few unresolved issues, and more potential plot points are being unraveled. I find this a bit worrisome since there is only one more book left to read at this time.

This series is disturbing fun. It's a bit like reading about a chess game between fate and Nikolas with Ben as Nikolas' king, and Gary Furlong as the watcher narrating the game.

Totally addicted!

I am complete addicted to this series. It is full of nuance and love and struggle. The characters in all their flaws. When you add the narration it’s probably one of a few Audio books I will register too. Worth every penny!

Whew!

I am addicted to this series. Nik and Ben are now among
all-time favorite couples. By the 7th installment I'm normally beyond bored with any series but each book and audio in this series just leaves me speechless. This is mm "thriller / romance" like you have never had it before. Your perspectives about life will be totally subverted.

Gary Furlong! He is just unreal. He is best as Nik. He gives the characters so much life. Simply outstanding!

This is the 7th book in the series. Start at the beginning and get ready to be totally blown away.

It took me a while to get into this one but once I did I could not stop. Lost sleep, ignored conversations, Brace yourselves!

enjoyed it

John Wiltshire is an unknown author for me. I picked up this series because I was looking for another long series (more than 5 books) revolving around the same characters and something a little "gritty" - it was a bonus that it was narrated by Gary Furlong. My overall comments are reflective of the whole 9 books, because I feel the 9 books are well worth the investment and it's been a very long time since I finished a series and went straight back to the beginning to listen again. 👍👍

Each book has a good pace and builds on events from the previous book as time progresses through the 14 years Ben & Nickolas are together, I was taken on a roller coaster ride of the best parts of an action/adventure movie, ran the full gamut of emotions and while the character development was subtle, it was well written and builds a relationship with a solid foundation that can withstand any force thrown its way.

Despite certain elements of some of the books not being to my liking, I was completely emersed in the stories, entertained from beginning to end and will definitely look for more from this author in the future.

📖 Story comment: Enduring Night:
Part 1: delightfully cold and creepy ... I've decided I wouldn't like living without sunlight!
Part 2: sorry ... the whole "finding God and God doesn't want me to be gay" didn't work for me - It just didn't really fit with the whole Ex Special Forces Ben Ryder character or the overall "tone" of this series.

🎧 Narrator comment: I enjoyed Gary Furlong's narration, he suits the characters, has good cadence, inflections and intonations and it's easy to distinguish the characters from each other. Overall an enjoyable performance and he bought the characters of the book to life

-------
Note to self ... the lack of lube drove me nuts ... 9 books and only one instance of "gun oil" to ease the way?

Discordant

This one didn’t work for me the way the others have. Nik & Ben have always had a weird & twisted relationship. In the other books this was weaved well through a variety of thrilling adventures.

This time, it was first half packed with mystery and suspense and the second half was just odd. I don’t know how to explain without spoilers - which I very seldom use in my reviews - so that’s below.

I did kind of like how it ended up and I’ll listen to the next book.

Narration:
Gary Furlong is amazing as always. Accents, personalities, emotions. It all sounds so effortless and like a full cast instead of one person. Loved his performance.

Spoilers:

Ben finds God. Whatever, I kind of get it when you almost lose someone you love and you’re bargaining with God to save them. But the whole, “God doesn’t want me to be gay” from Ben and for the entire second half of the book just didn’t work for me. Then Nik, who up until this point frequently denied being gay and hasn’t allowed an ounce of being publicly open about his relationship with Ben… is upset at Ben’s denouncement.

The pacing was slow, the storyline dragged, and the whole thing was just odd and out of character for both of them.

They did get back together and are now out to the world. So it’s not a cliffhanger.
