About this listen

Constable Evan Evans, sole police officer in the charming Welsh village of Llanfair, is assigned to assist an expedition to raise a World War II German bomber plane from a lake. The whole venture is being filmed for a documentary on World War II and Evans tries to assist the film crew by finding them local people with stories to tell. Little does he realize that resurrecting the past can sometimes mean opening old wounds. After some unhappy confrontations, it is not just the villagers who are upset by the filmmakers. Evans' own life is thrown into turmoil as he discovers his girlfriend Bronwen's past relationship with someone from the film crew.

Tensions build until one of the filmmakers disappears and is eventually found dead in a nearby slate mine. The case grows more complex as Evans slowly uncovers evidence that the victim had many enemies. In the process Evans also exposes an elaborate World War II scheme to hide paintings from the National Gallery. Do these paintings have something to do with the filmmaker's disappearance? How could he be connected to events that took place more than half a century ago?

With this fifth addition to her critically acclaimed series, Rhys Bowen creates a colorful, thrilling mystery set in two eras against the backdrop of a uniquely appealing small town filled with unforgettable characters.

FAVORITE ONE!!

Most of these are borderline cozy mysteries . With all the fun , shenanigans and who done it . I am really enjoying this series . From the locals with all their quirks to the dueling church marquees , which by now I look forward to hearing what they say with as much anticipation as the first lick of an ice cream cone on a sunny summer day. This story had more depth than the others with duel stories, past and present that really held my interest. I never have reread or listened to a " cozy" mystery before but I believe I will want to spend time with Constable Evans and friends more than once.

The most unique Evan book yet!

It was a surprise with the segments of going back and forth. Sometimes the separation was missing - just another second’s pause would have helped to realize where we were in the story. But overall this was a good storyline-that requires much attention to all the details.

Art, Sunken WWII Plane, and a Clever Constable

Book Five finds Constable Evans assigned to a film crew attempting to pull an old WWII German bomber from a lake, but everywhere he turns he gets deeper into . . . well, hot . . . water. 😏 The villagers are not anxious to discuss the past, which for them has some unpleasant memories. And even Evan Evans has discovered that his sweetheart, Bronwen has a connection to one of the filmmakers . . . causing him to have doubts about who the lovely young school teacher really is and how she feels about him. And then there's the mystery of the art work squirreled away in the slate mine, hidden from the Germans . . . was it all recovered? This series just gets better and better. Don't miss this tale of murder and once again, see how the young constable discovers the truth.

My very favorite one😊

I loved loved loved this story. Both of the stories were great but I especially loved the storyline about the young couple. I felt so very sorry for the young man and everything he went through. And Betsy cracked me up in this one. Especially the last of her antics in the book. Thank you Rhys Bowen and I love Roger Clarks voice. He also narrates some Jan Karen books. I think that’s how you spell her name. Check those out. You may like them too.

As expected, a wonderful story, well told

As expected, a wonderful story, well told. Bowen writes so well, tells such good stories, and has a narrator who does a splendid job.

This was my favorite Even mystery.

This was my favorite Even mystery, so far. loved the back story about world war II. I love historical fiction and this takes me back to other Rhys books set during that time period.

This one was a little harder to deal with cuz of the matwrial

Okay - excellent two story line format but I gotta say, this one was terrible and I definitely figured it out early on for the most part. Yikes.

Complex, but Enjoyable

Ms. Bowen is an incredible writer. I couldn't guess the perpetrator until the main character did. It's a brilliant psychological study about how our actions and perceptions affect us. The story is rich and easy to listen to. It's kind ofa sad story.

Good series

I already left a review on the last book so I’m going to say this on this book.. I like the series as I have bought them all up to this point. Rhys makes him pretty handsome but the cover put me off. Not handsome at all except for cheekbones. So I have to make up another image of him in my mind. I know this is trivial, don’t judge a book by its cover and all that, but we are visual human beings and it does catch the eye and interest if you have an attractive cover image even if it’s a landscape. Overall I’ve enjoyed the characters so that’s why I keep listening.
