Publisher's summary

The Arthur C. Clarke award-winning author of Children of Time brings us the second novel in an extraordinary space opera trilogy about humanity on the brink of extinction, and how one man's discovery will save or destroy us all.

After eighty years of fragile peace, the Architects are back, wreaking havoc as they consume entire planets. In the past, Originator artifacts—vestiges of a long-vanished civilization—could save a world from annihilation. This time, the Architects have discovered a way to circumvent these protective relics. Suddenly, no planet is safe.

Facing impending extinction, the Human Colonies are in turmoil. While some believe a unified front is the only way to stop the Architects, others insist humanity should fight alone. And there are those who would seek to benefit from the fractured politics of war—even as the Architects loom ever closer.

Idris, who has spent decades running from the horrors of his past, finds himself thrust back onto the battlefront. As an Intermediary, he could be one of the few to turn the tide of war. With a handful of allies, he searches for a weapon that could push back the Architects and save the galaxy. But to do so, he must return to the nightmarish unspace, where his mind was broken and remade.

What Idris discovers there will change everything.

A powerful addition to a most engrossing series

The author's grasp of how to weave a consistently convoluted and savagely engaging plot stream within a universe construct that is both multidimensional and technically challenging is immensely satisfying in the veins of the great masters of hard science fiction. Can't wait for the third installment in this series. It is like a melding of Isaac Asimov with Sherlock Holmes. A smorgasbord for the imagination! Highly recommended.

Great second book in the series.

It may not be complete as a standalone work of fiction, but it’s a great steppingstone in the series. I enjoyed the listen more than the first book; the reader seemed to really find her stride. The character development was excellent and I’m excited to get into book three.

Go Spacers!

Nice mix of hard, deep-time sci-fi and plausibly silly genres of old. Who doesn’t love a diversity of aliens mixing it up with gumshoes, pirates, space truckers, lawyers, woman warriors, cultish gangsters, and adorable masses of insect collectives operating in Trojan-horse-like bodies.

Strong but flawed

A worthy listen and continuation of the first book and I’ll definitely be listening to the third next, but there’s so much left unexplained and the further we get the more convinced I am that there will be no satisfactory tie up of all the loose ends. Still a great listen and worth the coin though.

Exquisite unification of differing plots to spectacular finale.

I really like the plot elements and the character development in the story. the author does a great job of also developing the big picture plot underlying the entire trilogy. One thing I don’t like is the overall crazy vagueness of under space and it’s denizens. I wish the author would give the readers just a tiny bit more insight into the larger plot because it feels like it’s all gonna come together in one master stroke at the end, and it might be too much all at once.

Wonderfully imaginative, masterfully narrated

I found this book, mind-blowingly, creative, exposing me to worlds and creatures that I never could’ve dreamt up myself. Sophie Aldred is the perfect narrator for this series, performing the whole cast of characters (human and otherwise) flawlessly. I’ve spent many hours listening to her and I can’t get enough! She brings all the wit, wonder and humor of this series to life beautifully.

This title (along with Shards of Earth) provided one of the most enjoyable audiobook experiences I’ve had in a long time! Can’t wait to listen to the next in the series!

Frustrating

The narrator is excellent and no one beats Tchaikovsky on world-building and character development. No one. But, I found the story extremely frustrating. I saw it listed as Book Two of Two so I assumed it would complete the series. It should definitely be listed as Book Two of Three/Four/whatever the plan is, because there is zero resolution and a massive cliffhanger. You might want to wait until the next is available and then consume all three at once, delighting in the characters without the frustration.

Great listen

Me and my GF are both hooked on the series! Great characters and story. The narrator isn't world class but is a good choice for the story; really like how she performs Solace.
