Se spiegassimo su un grande tavolo una mappa del mondo di oggi, saremmo costretti a indicare due grandi aree di crisi a noi molto vicine: una coprirebbe il territorio (già smembrato) dell'Ucraina vittima dell'aggressione russa del febbraio 2022; l'altra coinciderebbe con la striscia di Gaza, oggetto della rappresaglia israeliana dopo l'attacco di Hamas del 7 ottobre 2023. Per segnalare questi tremendi conflitti utilizzeremmo d'istinto un simbolo chiarissimo e autospiegante, una fiamma che divampa.
È da un passaggio, un'associazione apparentemente così semplice che Paolo Mieli prende avvio in questo suo nuovo, avvincente volume: gli incendi che stanno minando la stabilità dell'Occidente sono stati in molti casi innescati da scintille che covano sotto le ceneri del secolo scorso. E così, ripercorrendo eventi chiave ed esemplari delle tre disastrose dittature del Novecento, quella nazista, quella fascista, quella comunista, Mieli interviene con precisione nel dibattito storico contemporaneo, inquadrando sotto la lente del grande narratore le matrici (le braci, per restare nella semantica del fuoco) da cui le violente storture di oggi hanno avuto origine. Una rassegna completa che dalla Berlino degli anni Quaranta, quella di Hitler e Goebbels, arriva all'Italia di D'Annunzio e Mussolini; che spazia dai carri armati sovietici a Budapest alle illusioni di Mao. In apertura e in chiusura del libro, due lunghi saggi dedicati a Kiev e Gaza, alle guerre in corso, ai roghi più violenti che il nuovo millennio ha conosciuto (56 conflitti attivi, nel 2024). Un approccio storico «in presa diretta» che ci obbliga a confrontarci con i rischi che corriamo, con le soluzioni che, se individuate, sembrano impercorribili, con speranze di pace frustrate e deluse.
