This is a story about leaving home to chase a dream that was so deep in my bones I couldn’t quit, even when it nearly killed me.
It’s about the horse who held my heart suddenly disappearing.
It’s about love finding me when I least expected it.
And it’s about learning to trust a God who gives and takes away.
I pray that it blesses everyone who listens to it ~Sarah
If you were captivated by the classic racing novel Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand or the movie Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken, then you'll love Finding Gideon.
Synopsis:
A horse, a dog, and a longtime dream coming together—what more could a girl want?
Since the day I read my first Thoroughbred series book in fifth grade, I imagined crouching over the withers of a racehorse, feeling its muscles bunch together and release with each stride. But I wanted more than an image in my mind—I wanted it in real life.
It was my junior year of college when I left home to chase that dream, and for a minute I had it between my fingers. Gideon rode in the horse trailer and Sandi was curled into a ball in the backseat when I moved to Louisville. Within two weeks I was pounding down the track on young Thoroughbreds, impressing trainers with my bravery and skill. But soon, piece by piece, it began to crumble. Holding onto the dream, and my faith, was like grabbing water by the fistful and watching it slip between my fingers.
How could I keep going in this land of strangers and broken dreams? How could I trust the God who gives when He’s also the God who takes away? But how could I quit when the dream still stirred in my bones and Gideon was out there somewhere?

Story
It was a cool, quiet evening at Calumet Farm, where the most valuable racehorses—including the prolific stallion Alydar—had settled into their stalls for the evening. Alton Stone, filling in for the regular night watchman, completed his rounds at the barn. Although nothing seemed out of the ordinary, an inexplicable hunch led Stone to check on Alydar. What he found—a grievously injured horse with no discernable cause—jump-started one of the biggest mysteries to ever hit the horse racing world.

Story
This is what happens when a writer, preacher, and lover of words encounters some of creation’s wisest theologians: horses. First, she argues with them. They are, after all, horses. What could they possibly know about life and God that theologians haven’t already written? But slowly, she engages their language and listens to their holy wisdom, attending to how they express their being, actions, and relationships. She allows horses to draw her out of the faith of intellect and into a deeper faith of emotion, body, and soul.

In this illuminating book, brain scientist and horsewoman Janet Jones describes human and equine brains working together. Using plain language, she explores the differences and similarities between equine and human ways of negotiating the world. Mental abilities—like seeing, learning, fearing, trusting, and focusing—are discussed from both human and horse perspectives. Throughout, true stories of horses and handlers attempting to understand each other—sometimes successfully, sometimes not—help to illustrate the principles.

Derick Lugo had never been hiking. He certainly couldn't imagine going more than a day without manicuring his goatee. But with a job cut short and no immediate plans, this fixture of the New York comedy scene began to think about what he might do with months of free time. He had heard of the Appalachian Trail, but he had never seriously considered attempting to hike all 2,184.2 miles of it. Suddenly he found himself asking, Could he do it?

Story
In Wildlife Wars, Terry Grosz serves up fascinating stories - alternately hair-raising, hilarious, and heart-wrenching - from his 30-year struggle to protect wildlife in America. A natural storyteller, Grosz writes about the remarkable characters he met - on both sides of the law - as he matched wits with elk poachers, salmon snaggers, commercial-market duck hunters, and a host of other law-breakers. Best of all, though, these stories are so remarkably entertaining you won't want to put them down.

When Ball Four was published in 1970, it created a firestorm. Bouton was called a Judas, a Benedict Arnold and a “social leper” for having violated the “sanctity of the clubhouse.” Baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn tried to force Bouton to sign a statement saying the book wasn’t true. Ballplayers, most of whom hadn’t read it, denounced the book. It was even banned by a few libraries. Almost everyone else, however, loved Ball Four.

But what separates standout sports stars from the rest? In a paradigm-shifting new theory, acclaimed sportswriter Matt Fitzgerald identifies two key traits behind athletic success: strict self-regulation over thoughts and emotions and an unquenchable psychological need to pursue victory—even when it means enduring extreme mental and physical suffering.

Beautiful and Soul Moving
I saw this book come across my facebook and thought "oh here we go another horse book written by another believer" but something called me to listen/read it anyway, and I am SO HAPPY I did. This story truly had me crying and laughing with the author. I was challenged to look at my own relationship with God and see where I had fallen short. I too have a deep love for horses and have felt like my dreams with them have gone unanswered but this book allowed me to turn back to God just enough to here His call again. Thank you Sarah for sharing this beautiful story and helping me re-focus on God.

I laughed, I cried and now I’m a fan
I loved this story. From the very beginning, this book grabbed my attention and I could not stop listening. It’s narrated by the author and this adds so much depth and emotion to the storyline. Everything that happens in this story is NUTS and the author tells it in such a compelling and beautiful way, while grappling with difficult spiritual truths that we will all face at some point in life. Highly recommend.
