About this listen

Since there is no hope of my securing an eligible partner, due to sad lack of looks, I am running away.…

So wrote the sixth of the famous Armitage sisters. For how could colorless Frederica withstand a Season's scrutiny after the five beauties before her had married so magnificently? Disguised as a chambermaid, Freddie found her way into the household of the fashionable Duke of Pembury. That wild gentleman was soon on to her tricks and found himself escorting the lady to London. Once on the marriage mart, the five sisters preened and primped the youngest until Freddie could not recognize herself! They did not seem to notice that a certain gentleman's attention had Freddie blooming, and that perhaps Freddie was not fated to be plain - or unmarried - after all....

Delightful, and stands the test of time

I read this many years ago, and was delighted to find the book in the Audible catalogue. It's even better as preformed by Charlotte Anne Dore. She brought this wonderful story to life. Great story with a great narrator. Highly recommended!

Dullest of the series

Overall, this is not Chesney's best work. All of the sisters are vain, silly little girls who behave in childish, petty ways. The heroes are interesting but all of them are around thirty years old. So kind of creepy that these adult males who have been to war are interested in these stupid childlike girls. The vicar and his loose moral antics are way too much described in this book. His latest tart, Sarah Millet is a housemaid at the vicarage. And there is a return of a villain from book 1 & 2, which is soooooo boring. I was quite delighted when the book was over and I did not have to suffer anymore!

I never understood why they used this narrator for these stories.

So so bad narration. She sounds like an elementary teacher reading to her students. Her pitch and tone are weird. This story had hardly any emphasis on the two main characters. Very disappointing.

Fine finish for the sixth ‘sis’

Very formulaic, therefore obviously predictable, but still very fun. All the characters are engaging.

Mrs. Beaton was in a prime period of writing during the 80s, but it’s also obvious she ran out of new storylines for the girls and stumbled her way to finish the series.

Great series!

Lovely, and predictable! Lady Goldolphin and her malaprops. "Follicles!" 🤣 it's a fun romp, a empty headed series, yet entertaining. One wished, the characters were a tad less gullible and a eensy bit more intelligent.
