About this listen
Free speech lies at the heart of our American identity. The Founding Fathers enshrined this right in the first 45 words of the Bill of Rights.
But what does the First Amendment really mean? How have views of its provisions evolved since 1791?
The First Amendment grants us freedom of religion and the press, as well as the rights to petition and peaceful assembly. But perhaps no doctrine is as important to liberty as the freedom of speech. In this 12-lecture audio course, First Amendment expert Professor David L. Hudson, Jr., leads you on a gripping tour of free speech law in the United States. Holding it up as a blueprint for personal liberty, you will examine the history of the First Amendment as well as the terminology and theories that undergird it.
Freedom of speech encompasses all manner of expression, both verbal and non-verbal. Through a close reading of the Free Speech Clause and a recap of the Founding Fathers’ historical moment, you'll see why it was and continues to be a cornerstone of American culture.
In five hours, this succinct and brilliantly taught course gives you the opportunity to comprehend the historical, legal, and philosophical basis for one of your most vital rights. You will better understand current free speech debates and gain valuable insight into the First Amendment's future.

Today's "machine-learning" systems, trained by data, are so effective that we've invited them to see and hear for us - and to make decisions on our behalf. But alarm bells are ringing. Systems cull résumés until, years later, we discover that they have inherent gender biases. Algorithms decide bail and parole - and appear to assess black and white defendants differently. We can no longer assume that our mortgage application, or even our medical tests, will be seen by human eyes. And autonomous vehicles on our streets can injure or kill.

The right of Americans to voice their beliefs without government approval or oversight is protected under what may well be the most honored and least understood addendum to the US Constitution - the First Amendment. Floyd Abrams, a noted lawyer and award-winning legal scholar specializing in First Amendment issues, examines the degree to which American law protects free speech more often, more intensely, and more controversially than is the case anywhere else in the world.

On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Story
Americans wage many of today’s fiercest policy debates and culture wars over constitutional meaning. It’s because constitutional law is so fundamental to our democracy that law schools across the country teach the subject. It's the area of law that determines what federal and state governments are permitted to do, and what rights you have as an individual citizen of the US. Here, you'll get the same accessible, well-rounded introduction to constitutional law as a typical law student - but with the added benefit of noted constitutional scholar Eric Berger's brilliant insights.

There are two kinds of knowledge law school teaches: legal rules on the one hand, and tools for thinking about legal problems on the other. Although the tools are far more interesting and useful than the rules, they tend to be neglected in favor of other aspects of the curriculum. In The Legal Analyst, Ward Farnsworth brings together in one place all of the most powerful of those tools for thinking about law.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

David Hudson takes you through the history of the First Amendment in a way that is easy to understand while also keeping in necessary, core information. He does a great job of explaining a legal topic in a clear and concise way that holds your attention. I would recommend this audible for anyone who is studying in law school or just wants a better understanding of the First Amendment. This audio book is a must listen and has urged me to find other pieces written by Prof. David Hudson, Jr.

Brilliant professor!
With a rich understanding of legal concepts, pivotal court decisions, and current controversies, Hudson sheds new light on some of the most important questions of our day. Frankly, he's a great story teller. I found this series both intellectually engaging and a real joy to listen to.

Excellent examples and a fantastic narrator
The many examples of various doctrines which have guided Supreme Court decisions are worth the listen alone.
The narrator (the author himself) is definitely the best choice for this topic. He emphasizes important parts and speaks so that you can feel that he cares about the subject.
I now feel like I fully understand the many controversies surrounding the freedom of speech. And I've acquired a deeper respect for the history of free speech in the US as well as the people who wrote it centuries ago.

Truth we all need to learn
The narration is perfect and easy to understand. The content is something every American needs to learn so that you can stand up in the courts on your own without lawyers. Learn how to write pleadings so you can keep your rights.

This book is shit
A boring reading of how the interpretation of free speech has been twisted back and forth through the years.
