About this listen

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist. Put New York Times best-selling authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett together...and all Hell breaks loose.©1990 Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (P)2009 HarperCollins Publishers Contemporary Fiction Satire Fantasy Comedy Funny Witty Scary Feel-Good Heartfelt Paranormal

Critic reviews

"Pratchett (of Discworld fame) and Gaiman (of Sandman fame) may seem an unlikely combination, but the topic (Armageddon) of this fast-paced novel is old hat to both. Pratchett's wackiness collaborates with Gaiman's morbid humor; the result is a humanist delight to be savored and reread again and again." (Amazon.com review)

Finally!

This has been one of my print favorites for a decade, and I don't know why it has taken so long to get to audio, but it's finally here! A great, hilarious, even thought provoking journey through the End Days. If you like Mssrs. Gaiman or Pratchett's other works, or Monty Python, Douglas Adams or British humor in general, pick it up! You won't be sorry.

Great Fun for Christopher Moore Fans

If you enjoyed Christopher Moore's A Dirty Job, you will enjoy Good Omens. It's a little hard to follow at times because there's no pause between scene changes. But you'll get used to it and the characters are well-read and written.

Award Winner

After listening to Good Omens, I did my first narrator search because Martin Jarvis does such an excellent job. The insightful, surrealistic humor elegantly handles weighty matters. I would suggest this book to anybody with a sense of humor but especially to those, like me, that are a bit confused as to what existence is and why we are here.

Any additional comments?

This book was so good i can't even explain or have a favorite part. I listened to it from start to finish in one sitting.

The end of the world can be fun!

Angels, Demons, Witches, Witch Hunters, the Four Horsemen (now on motorcycles) and something even scarier - an eleven year old boy - all prepare for Armageddon. It turns out bureaucracy in Heaven and Hell isn't any more efficient than here on earth. Not a serious meditation, just a lot of fun, satirizing such diverse topics as fad diets, telemarketers, New Agers, and more. Especially charming are the angel and demon who have found themselves uncomfortably attached to human life.

Fantastic story, off-putting narration

The story we all know and love is there, but the narration is so thick with stereotype and colloquiums that it’s difficult to to stay focused. The character voices that the narrator affects are jarring and unnecessary. It’s a British story written by British authors, but I’ve never met a Brit that spoke so heavily and off-putting as this. Read this book. Don’t listen to it.

Funny, off-beat humor

This was great - off beat, black humor, very well read. I couldn't wait to finish it so I could listen to it again!

Dogma meets Monty Python

What I did enjoy about it was the dry wit of it. If you’re not familiar or not a fan of British humor, you won’t enjoy this book. Equally silly and stuffy.

What I wasn’t a fan of was the every growing cast of characters.

*Foot note: While it was a diverse spectrum, it was hard to keep track of them all.*

Just wasn't a big winner for me.

Narrator was great, but the story just never grabbbed me. Normally a big Gaiman fan, but this felt too slow and I just didn't connect with some of the characters as I have in other books.

Cute

I'm a big Neil Gaiman fan. There's something about his sense of humor that I adore. And this book hams it up. Plus it's got a perfect narrator to deliver those amusing lines in just the right way. I think this book delivered on everything it said it would be.
