About this listen
Presented here are 30 Western stories of unparalleled realism and uncompromising emotional complexity. Marshal Matt Dillon (William Conrad) doesn't revel in violence, but he uses it because he lives in a violent place at a violent time, where only the violent can survive.
Standing by the Marshal are his shambling deputy Chester (Parley Baer), his acerbic confidant Doc (Howard McNear), and the pretty saloon girl Kitty (Georgia Ellis). Townspeople, ranchers, gunfighters, and lost souls are drawn to Dodge City for encounters with Dillon. Some walk away. Some don't.
Episodes Include: Bloody Hands 07-14-57; Kitty Caught 07-21-57; Cow Doctor 07-28-57; Jayhawkers 08-11-57; The Peace Officer 08-18-57; Grass 08-25-57; Custer 09-22-57; Professor Lute Bone 10-20-57; Bull 11-03-57; The Guitar 03-02-58; Why Not? 03-30-58; Yorky 04-06-58; How to Die For Nothing 05-10-58; Quarter Horse 06-01-58; The Cast 07-27-58; Miguel's Daughter 08-03-58; False Witness 09-14-58; Big Girl Lost 09-21-58; Kitty's Rebellion 09-28-58; Tag, You're It 10-05-58; Doc's Showdown 10-12-58; Kick Me 10-19-58; The Tragedian 10-26-58; Old Man's Gold 11-02-58; Target: Chester 11-09-58; The Correspondent 11-23-58; Burning Wagon 11-30-58; The Grass Asp 12-07-58; Where'd They Go? 12-21-58; The Choice 12-28-58

Walk the streets of Dodge City with William Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillon in 20 masterpieces of western storytelling. Dillon was not a straight-backed rider with a steely jaw. He was a man who had seen too much, a survivor of conflicts he'd rather have avoided…a man who knew only too well what errors of judgment could cost on the frontier. Parley Baer played Dillon's sidekick Chester, a seemingly naive yokel who was nevertheless as cold-blooded as Dillon when occasion demanded.

Gunsmoke - & Cigarette Smoke!
I love these episodes. William Conrad was a great Matt Dillon, much more of a hardass than James Arness. I love the TV series and was really surprised to find these radio shows. The original Chester sounds just like Dennis Weaver from the TV version. "Mishter Dillin." My only complaint is the inclusion of the cigarette commercials that funded the show. It's sad to realize people fell for the selling of that poison. If you download this Gunsmoke, cigarette smoke comes along with it. Highlight (for me): Marshal Dillon orders Chester to spit a wad of chewing tobacco at a rattlesnake when neither man can risk firing a gun. "Juice it." There's not a dull moment here--except for the commercials.
