Hafmeyjan litla er yngst sex systra sem alast upp hjá föður sínum, hafkónginum, og ömmu sinni á hafsbotni. Systurnar alast upp sem perlur í ostruskeljum undirdjúpanna, en láta sig dreyma um heiminn ofan hafsins. Á fimmtán ára afmælisdaginn fá þær loksins leyfi til að synda upp úr sjónum og skoða mannheima. Litla hafmeyjan sér á eftir systrum sínum einni af annarri upp á yfirborðið, allar heillast þær af ólíkum hlutum en verða fljótlega leiðar á landinu og sækja aftur í hafdjúpin.
Þegar hinn langþráði afmælisdagur rennur loksins upp syndir hafmeyjan litla upp á yfirborðið full eftirvæntingar. Þar hittir hún fyrir skip ungs konungssonar og verður samstundis ástfangin af honum. Þegar skipið ferst í óveðri bjargar hún prinsinum unga og kemur honum á þurrt land. Sjálf snýr hún aftur í hafdjúpin, en getur ekki gleymt ástinni sinni. Að lokum ákveður hún að fórna heimkynnum sínum og sporðinum til að lifa í samfélagi manna. En sú ákvörðun hefur víðtækar og sársaukafullar afleiðingar.

H.C. Andersen (1805-1875) er eitt þekktasta skáld Danmerkur. Eftir hann liggja á fjórða þúsund ævintýra sem þýdd hafa verið á meira en 125 tungumál. „Hafmeyjuna litlu" þarf vart að kynna, en hún er ein hans þekktari sagna, hefur heillað margar kynslóðir með ljúfsárri sögu sinni og fallegum boðskap, en einnig blásið mörgum listamönnum sköpunarkrafti í brjóst. Fræg er stytta Edvards Eriksen sem er eitt af einkennismerkjum Kaupmannahafnar. Litla hafmeyjan er þroskasaga sem segir frá því að yfirgefa fjölskylduna og fullorðnast, með þeim erfiðleikum og vonbrigðum sem því getur fylgt, allt ofið í ævintýraljóma sagnaheims H.C. Andersen. rn
