About this listen

An original novel set in the Halo universe — based on the New York Times best-selling video game series!

October 2559. With the galaxy in the suffocating grip of a renegade artificial intelligence, another perilous threat has quietly emerged in the shadows: The Keepers of the One Freedom, a fanatical and merciless Covenant splinter group, has made its way beyond the borders of the galaxy to an ancient Forerunner installation known as the Ark. Led by an infamous Brute named Castor, the Keepers intend to achieve what the Covenant, in all its might, failed to: Activate Halo and take the last steps on the path of the Great Journey into transcendence.

But unknown to Castor and his new, unexpected ally on the Ark, there are traitors to the cause in their midst — namely the Ferrets, composed of Office of Naval Intelligence operative Veta Lopis and her young team of Spartan-IIIs, who have been infiltrating the Keepers to lay the groundwork for Castor’s assassination. But with ONI’s field operations now splintered and cut off by the Guardian threat, Veta’s original mission has suddenly and dramatically escalated in scope. There’s simply no choice or fallback plan — either the Ferrets somehow stop the Keepers or the galaxy faces an extinction-level event....

Another great read!

I enjoyed the story, though I struggled to differentiate the narrator's portrayal of the characters.

En-Sign

Not my favorite narrator.
One would think they would proof listen for obvious mispronunciations.

Please double check pronunciations

For the most part, I enjoyed it. the biggest issue for me was the incorrect pronunciation of Ensign. It made me cringe each time she said the rank.

Solid book. Narrator good quality, but no good fit

Story is great. A little rocky at the start like many of Troy's books in my opinion, but once the pieces have been set and the plot starts in motion it's solid.

I don't think the narrator is a "bad narrator" like some have been saying. But I think she may be a poor fit for the halo universe. She does a fantastic job with the 3 Spartans and shows off some of her range. But when it came to the dialogue scenes within the covenant or banished I think she struggled finding distinction between the many different "low and gravely voiced alien males" which is understandable, but it does make those segments a bit more confusing than they would have been otherwise.

Worthy Addition

Well written character development. The narrator has decent voice acting range but misprounces MAC & ensign.

Great story!

I love the Veta Lopis stories, and this was no exception. It was also great getting to see them interact with the Spirit of Fire crew, and The Banished. my only real complaint is I didn't like the voices for the Gammas. But besides that, the performance was really good!

Fire The Narrator

The narrator clearly did not know anything about the halo world before reading this book. Constant mispronunciations throughout the story are very annoying. Her performance was also terrible. It was like listening to a mom trying read her kids a bedtime story. The story is outstanding but it was so hard to listen to due to the narrator’s performance.

Great story/ Poor narrator choice

Loved the whole story and I don’t regret for a second purchasing. That being said, why in the world would this company not have Scott Brick do the narration for this one. It took several chapters before I could feel immersed in the story since this female narrator’s characters sound wildly different. The elite is an old and wise character and now he sounds like a witty and sarcastic teenager, Olivia also sounded waaay different. Simon & Shuster (spelling) please never have female narrators portray brutes, it just doesn’t work. Nothing against her, but it just isn’t physically possible. Scott Brick is to Halo novels what Kevin Conroy was to Batman. It’s just not the same if you put someone different, ESPECIALLY to end a TRILOGY!
