About this listen
It was a hard battle and it took time to sink in that it was finally behind us. The medical and surgical teams from the Neurology department at the University of Chicago must have been totally drained working in an unique environment once the go ahead was received for their high impact life-saving intervention.
I was dying, poisoned by my legs that had spread their poison slowly but surely upwards before they were amputated too late. To think, Grandpa ‘J’ played rugby for Scotland and thought it too dangerous a game, so he got me a motocross bike for my fourth birthday!
This was fantastic.
This was not just pushing the boundaries of science.
This was stepping right into science fiction: This was science fiction going mainstream.
I eye-typed my first ever question from inside my new world to be read - and heard - by the outside real world: “How are you?”
It has taken me 27 years to fully transit from the physical world to an all embracing virtual one but still one where I could look back into the old world.
Where I could still be part of the real world. Where I could, for the first time in 27 years, turn my head even though it was weighing the better part of two tons.
I was 41 when I died on the Moon.
I had an accident, cracking my weakened scull, allowing the escaping brain fluids and some brain matter to contaminate what may well have been the only other wet spot on the Moon. A salty frozen puddle that has most probably never seen sun, shielded in a shallow crater on the rim of the Northern Lunar pole.
A Sci-Fi story with a twist. Some people go to the Dignitas Clinic in Switzerland.
I went to the Moon. It was not a suicide mission.
It was a celebration to be me mission. It was as much a public relations exercise as a first in scientific expedition.
Nobody understood that better than my Mom with her blog.

Story
The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

Story
The ice is coming. It was the last thing we expected, but the world is freezing. A new ice age has dawned. Billions have fled the glaciers. A cataclysmic war is coming. In orbit, a group of scientists are running the Winter Experiments, a last-ditch attempt to understand why the planet is cooling. None of the climate models they build make sense. But then they discover an anomaly, an unexplained variation in solar radiation...and something else. Close to the burning edge of the sun, they catch a fleeting glimpse of something that shouldn’t be there....

Story
Colonel Chris Hadfield has spent decades training as an astronaut and has logged nearly 4000 hours in space. During this time he has broken into a Space Station with a Swiss army knife, disposed of a live snake while piloting a plane, and been temporarily blinded while clinging to the exterior of an orbiting spacecraft. The secret to Col. Hadfield's success - and survival - is an unconventional philosophy he learned at NASA: prepare for the worst and enjoy every moment of it.

Story
Space is a world devoid of the things we need to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot showers, fresh produce, privacy, beer. Space exploration is in some ways an exploration of what it means to be human. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? Have sex? Smell flowers? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive a bailout at 17,000 miles per hour?

Story
Late in the 21st century, Earth receives what looks like an urgent plea for help from planet Proxima Centauri b in the closest star system to the Sun. Astrophysicists suspect a massive solar flare is about to destroy this heretofore-unknown civilization. Story
The very far future: The galaxy is a drifting wreck of black holes, neutron stars, and chill white dwarfs. The age of star formation is long past. Yet there is life here, feeding off the energies of the stellar remnants, and there is mind, a tremendous galaxy-spanning intelligence each of whose thoughts lasts a hundred thousand years. And this mind cradles memories of a long-gone age when a more compact universe was full of light... The 27th century: Proxima Centauri, an undistinguished red dwarf star, is the nearest star to our sun. How would it be to live on such a world?

Story
At the turn of the 22nd century, scientists make a breakthrough in human spaceflight. Through a revolutionary method known as somaforming, astronauts can survive in hostile environments off Earth using synthetic biological supplementations. With the fragility of the body no longer a limiting factor, human beings are at last able to journey to neighboring exoplanets long known to harbor life. A team of these explorers, Ariadne O’Neill and her three crewmates, are hard at work in a planetary system 15 light-years from Sol, on a mission to ecologically survey four habitable worlds.

Story
Roger Torraway watched in horror as the monster lurched, toppled over and died. Project Man Plus had gone suddenly and drastically wrong. The race to colonize Mars was too important, too costly, and America was already too committed, for plans to be scrapped. They would have to make a new Martian. And Roger Torraway was it, candidate for the endless surgery, operation after painful operation, that would enable him to survive on that faraway planet.
