Publisher's summary

Hazel Thornton has one great ambition: to help the sick and wounded as a nurse. But that dream can never become a reality. After a devastating childhood trauma, she has spent her life battling fits of panic that make it impossible to finish her studies. Everything changes, however, when a trip to Spain takes a perilous turn that derails her plans to visit her father for Christmas and immediately plunges her into the dangers of a brutal war.

With single-minded focus, she springs into action to help her fellow travelers. To ensure their continued care, she begins work at a Spanish hospital alongside Dr. Jim Jackson, a man whose only emotion seems to be wariness of his new assistant. Armed with gifts of support from each of her dearest friends, a group that dubs themselves the Blue Orchid Society, Hazel embarks on a journey of hope and healing to battle the demons of her past with the help of the doctor who has captured her heart.

History and Romance for the Win

4.5 Stars

One of my favorite things in Jennifer B. Moore’s Blue Orchid Society series is the friendships formed between the women and the way the support each other to follow their dreams. In Healing Hazel, readers get more of those friendships even though Hazel is apart from her friends for most of the book.

I couldn’t help but sympathize with Hazel as her plans to visit her father for Christmas crumble then root for her as she puts her nursing training into action. Despite Dr. Jim Jackson’s opposition to Hazel and some of her ideas, she believes in her training and implements it when she can as she becomes friends with the other nurses and some of the patients.

Moore puts her characters in some difficult situations, which increases the tension in the plot from time to time, but my favorite part of Healing Hazel was when Hazel opened the gifts from her friends because each one of them had been given with thought and consideration to who Hazel is as a person. And the way each item was used throughout the book was perfect.

From the setting in Spain to the medical procedures to the conflict during the era, this book is well researched, giving readers some history along with a captivating romance. Healing Hazel is a bit of a departure from the first two books in the series, but completely worth the read.

Great characters & Historically accurate

This was such an interesting story because of both the character portrayals and the historical aspects.

This was indeed an interesting time for women, as they became more prominent in the workforce. In this story we get to learn more about nursing during the time and teaching of Florence Nightingale as well as the history of the early days of the Red Cross where they were going into dangerous war zones as neutral parties only there to heal the sick and injured.

Jim and Hazel were a great couple and it was lovely to see their relationship develop as well as to learn more of the relationships between Hazel and other members of the Blue Orchid Society.

The audible narration was also wonderfully done.

Lovely Story

I really enjoyed Hazel and Jim. Their stories were beautifully written and Noah Wall voiced both really well. Definitely recommend
