About this listen

Matilda, Duchess of Hadshire, is virtually a prisoner of her cruel husband, who romances his mistress right under the duchess' nose. Her only joy is dreaming of the handsome Earl of Torridon - for like her, he is trapped in a horrid marriage and longs to find true love and happiness.

Though she secretly wishes for the death of her unkind husband, Matilda never could have imagined the guilt that plagues her when the illustrious duke is befittingly murdered by his own mistress! When Matilda turns to Torridon for comfort, she discovers a few surprises are in store for both of them.

not a recommendation

I found the story line to be drawn out. the reader was very meticulous with her words and sounded like she was reading rather than telling a story. was very hard to get into the story due to the fluency. the change in voice for the characters did not help but rather hindered my ability to the storyline. the Earl was made to sound more like a controlling stalker rather than a man smitten with the Duchess. I do not find an interest in reading the rest of the series because of how poorly this book was written and executed. sorry but I did not find this book worth the time it took to hear.

Not Understanding the Negative

…reviews. I enjoyed this too short book. It kept my attention all the way through. Narration was good and the story plausible. I recommend this story

The narration is terrible

The narrator has no grasp of how to actually narrate. It completely distracted from the story. Would’ve been a good story otherwise.

She rises to her challenge s

Sad beginning funny ending She is feeling helpless but then begins to help herself and still has more trials to over come. I love the ending with the stool, I like how she is kid to those to work for her as well as her neighbors

pretty good

i thought this was pretty entertaining, although the beginning was sad. however, i didn't understand how 2 people who had the experience of being in bad marriages would want to jump right back into marriage with someone they had just met. that seemed out of character. other than that it was good.

Narration is poor

Surprised the writing is so basic. It’s like the sentences were composed for an automated narration. Unfortunately the narration sounds exactly like automated weather reports. Sadly the voice for the Earl is terrible & makes a 29-yr old character sound like a grouchy grandfather. Ruined any romantic experience. All in all too bad.

Quirky smart fun!!!

Perfect for Halloween season, this is Marion Chesney at her best. Tongue in cheek romance with dark humor. I can’t get enough.

Matilda

The book was OK, but Matilda was a little annoying. I felt sorry that she was abused, but she had the tons support. So the scandal was mute in light of the fact that everyone also supported the Earl. So she was not the heroine I would gave liked.

Somewhat entertaining story marred by flat narration

The first story in this series was read by a fantastic and well-known narrator, and I was all in for this next installment.

The story is interesting and dark humor with some crimes gone awry intertwined with the romantic plot.

The FMC has a very buttoned up personality due to her terrible situation so the flat affect maybe made sense though I still found it annoying to hear throughout the entire book for the most part. The ultimate villain also had this voice, as does the narrator at various times.

The narrator has some ability with voices but the MMC voice sounds really old. The narration was markedly better at the end of the book, but not nearly enough.

I couldn’t follow some of the plot because the monotone wasn’t engaging or believable.

Horrific Naration!

Narrator was SO AWFUL that I couldn't wait for the book to end! I will NEVER listen to another book that is narrated by her. The male lead was made to sound angry & hostile in Every Scene, and the female lead always sounded as if she were highly medicated & monotone. Truly Awful for my ears. Sadly, I couldn't say if I enjoyed the story line or not - couldn't enjoy anything about it because of the narration!
