Na de vroegtijdige dood van zijn moeder wordt de elfjarige boekenwurm Bastiaan Balthazar Boeckx thuis door zijn vader verwaarloosd en op school gepest vanwege zijn overgewicht. Wanneer hij op een dag aan een groep pestkoppen probeert te ontsnappen stormt hij het antiquariaat van de excentrieke Karel Konraad Koriander binnen. Hier steelt Bastiaan een boek met de titel ‘Het oneindige verhaal’. Dit boek gaat over het magische rijk Fantásië, wat in nood verkeert omdat De Kleine Keizerin, die Fantásië regeert, ziek is en het rijk tegelijkertijd langzaam wordt opgeslokt door iets wat ‘het Niets’ heet. Als blijkt dat Bastiaan de sleutel is tot de redding van zowel De Kleine Keizerin als Fantásië zelf, wordt hij onderdeel van het verhaal en beleeft hij spannende, gevaarlijke en karatervormende avonturen. Kan Bastiaan Fantásië redden? Of redt Fantásië Bastiaan?
Het oneindige verhaal van Michael Ende is een klassieker in de categorie jeugdliteratuur. Het boek spreekt niet alleen tot, maar ook over de menselijke verbeeldingskracht. In 1984 is het verhaal verfilmd.
Michael Andreas Helmuth Ende (1929-1995) was een wereldberoemde Duitse schrijver en de enige zoon van de surrealistische schilder Edgar Ende. Hij schreef voornamelijk jeugdliteratuur en fantasieverhalen, die in meer dan veertig talen zijn vertaald. Het oneindige verhaal is verreweg zijn meest bekende boek. Andere bekende werken zijn Jim Koop en Lucas de Machinist, Momo en De toverdrank.
