Publisher's summary

"Into his fateful heap of days the soul of man is cast.”

Only a few months from his 50th year, Nikolas is feeling a distinct wobble in his formidable certainties. Aleksey Primakov appears to have become irrelevant. All he needs, therefore, is to be dragged into an adventure with Devon's answer to the three musketeers. How many times can he tell Ben and his moronic friends that a mutilated body buried on Dartmoor has nothing to do with them? But not only does this desecration slowly become their business, it cuts to the heart of the life they have created together. It's just as well, perhaps, that generals never do actually retire....

Absolutely loved this series

Enjoyed this series. The characters were engaging and the storyline was brilliant. I liked how each book added to the characters personality. The Narrator was superb and loved how he brought the characters to life. I am so hoping book 9 will be out sometime soon.
Definitely a series I would listen to again!!

Great story. Great narration.

Some of the bits and pieces of the previous book that felt unsettled are resolved a bit more firmly in this book. Ben is still coming to terms with how his found family reacted to his apparent defection. Naturally, as he is settling back into some semblance of normalcy, Ben and Nikolas find a mutilated body. Uncovering the mystery behind the body parallels the challenges Ben, Nikolas, and the rest of the family are working through.

The author adresses some very serious moral and social issues in this story, but also leaves plenty of room for humor, action, and plot twists. The layered plot lines continue to build with each volume. Although this book has a great resolution, I hope for more. I also look forward to Gary Furlong's continued narration wich enhances the story with his excellent performance.

One of my favorites in a fantastic series

Nic is feeling old… but even that is nothing compared to mystic Dartmoor, witches, human sacrifice, altered states of consciousness, breaking and entering, and worst of all, having to deal with the Moron and the Professor, along for the ride!

Creepy and suspenseful and funny and sexy and so very satisfying!!!

Gary Furlong does another amazing job at bringing it all to life.

My favorite Series

This latest chapter in the saga of Nik and Ben's lives has a lot of humor in it.
Poor Nik is having an identity crisis I guess you'd say, due to his upcoming birthday. Ben finds this funny (maybe because of the type of person he knows Nik is/has been) and never let's an opportunity to remind him how "old" Nik is go by. I've listened to the books so many times, I know when the digs are coming. "Dozy ol' cat" is a favorite of mine and the visit to the museum is particularly fun.
Gary Furlong is absolutely outstanding in this series. His ability to transition from character to character so smoothly is just amazing. He doesn't just 'read' the book, he acts it out and superbly. There are not enough stars available to reflect my opinion of his performance here.

enjoyed it

John Wiltshire is an unknown author for me. I picked up this series because I was looking for another long series (more than 5 books) revolving around the same characters and something a little "gritty" - it was a bonus that it was narrated by Gary Furlong. My overall comments are reflective of the whole 9 books, because I feel the 9 books are well worth the investment and it's been a very long time since I finished a series and went straight back to the beginning to listen again. 👍👍

Each book has a good pace and builds on events from the previous book as time progresses through the 14 years Ben & Nickolas are together, I was taken on a roller coaster ride of the best parts of an action/adventure movie, ran the full gamut of emotions and while the character development was subtle, it was well written and builds a relationship with a solid foundation that can withstand any force thrown its way.

Despite certain elements of some of the books not being to my liking, I was completely emersed in the stories, entertained from beginning to end and will definitely look for more from this author in the future.

📖 Story comment: His Fateful Heap of Days: I liked the contemplation of Nik & Ben getting older, it’s generally not a story line that is explored and was well written, I also like that there is little swearing in this series.

🎧 Narrator comment: I enjoyed Gary Furlong's narration, he suits the characters, has good cadence, inflections and intonations and it's easy to distinguish the characters from each other. Overall an enjoyable performance and he bought the characters of the book to life.

Note to self ... the lack of lube drove me nuts ... 9 books and only one instance of "gun oil" to ease the way?

Read this magnificent intriguing book , also it has many extremely funny parts where I was actually laughing out loud.
All the extended family have much to say and offer and once again I read then listened to the incredible audiobook.
This book is so much more that perfect.

This goes for the entire series.

If you enjoy m/m romance You will never do better. And while there are many books in the series, Neither the characters nor their adventures Ever lose their freshness. The writing is clever and intelligent and evocative.

I've left least one review for john wiltshire's books in kindle , but I have not done so here in audible. And that's remiss of me because this narrator is very special. I always know who who was speaking. He brings gravitas without edging into the maudlin. But he makes the humor vivid as well. The man's comic timing Is unbelievable to me especially when he's got several characters holding a Quick and often silly Conversation. Somehow he seems to make Everything work exactly as it was intended.
