House of Blight is one of those books I had trouble putting down. I loved the totally unique magic system and the eerie but cozy setting... A must-read for any romantasy lover!” — NISHA J. TULI, internationally bestselling author of Trial of the Sun Queen?

The first novel in an eerie, darkly creative, and romantic new gothic fantasy duology from Maxym M. Martineau, for listeners of Sarah J. Maas and Rachel Gillig.

Edira Brillwyn is a threadmender. She holds a rare, lifesaving power that can cure disease and heal injuries in the blink of an eye. But magic always comes with a cost, and saving anyone sacrifices a sliver of her own life. She’s always kept her abilities hidden…until the powerful Fernglove family discovers her secret.

The Ferngloves are charming and beautiful, possess powerful magic, and don’t take no for an answer—especially Orin, the head of these ruling elites. When Edira’s brothers unexpectedly contract blight—an incurable virus killing people throughout the town, and an illness too strong for her to heal them both—Orin offers to help. Together at his estate they’ll research a cure while Orin slows their sickness and Edira hones her magic. His kindness and honesty surprises Edira, as does her undeniable attraction to him.

But the other Ferngloves are suspicious of her power and may be more dangerous than the ever-present disease. The longer Edira stays within the confines of the Manor, the more the family’s pristine exterior begins to crack—until Edira discovers a terrifying secret and must choose who she can save and at what cost…

4.5 Stars ⭐️ House of Blight is the first book in the Threadmender Chronicles. Edira has hidden her abilities to heal, because her aunt Rowena was taken when she was little. Now, Edira’s 2 brothers caught the blight, a sickness that is highly contagious like the Black Death, and Orlin offered to help save her brothers if she would go to work for him to find a cure for the blight. Orlin and his family are Evers, a magical beings with magical powers and the ability to have immortality. Edira is taken to his house, and there are a lot of secrets. Edira knew she should not trust anyone, and yet she ends up in a love triangle with Orlin and Rorik (Orlin’s brother). This love triangle worked well in the context of the story. If Edira used her heal, she would lose minutes, hours, weeks, or even years off her life. Imagine the destruction of Edira’s body if she tried to cure blight without an Ever’s magical help. She needed more power to cure blight, but who was telling her the truth? The longer Edira stays on Fernglove, the more she uncovers what is actually hiding behind the pristine veneer of world she is new to.

The gothic vibes of Fernglove Manor made me think of Thornfield Hall from Jane Eyre. Like Thornfield Hall, Fernglove Manor had a lot of secrets and the feeling of being watched. Eeriness bled through the pages. There groundwork of a romance was done well, but as this is the first book in a duology, there will need to be a lot of groveling and work to be done in the second book. Edira is a strong heroine who never wavered from her ultimate goal. She admitted when she was wrong, did not take the brutal tactics of the Evers, but also listened to her gut. Orlin is very likable in the beginning. Rorik is an enigma to Edira, but he also found a way to be himself towards Edira. The ending had twists that were very interesting! Obviously there is a cliffhanger, and I am excited to see what the next book will bring!

It was refreshing to read something that had a little bit of a different storyline to it. I loved the magical elements in it of the threads of life. I’m hoping there is another book based off how this one ended. 🤞 it definitely was a very unique world with a very different storyline a nice mashup from your every day fantasy.
