Publisher's summary

Number one global bestselling author Sarah J. Maas launches her brand-new CRESCENT CITY series with House of Earth and Blood: the story of half-Fae and half-human Bryce Quinlan as she seeks revenge in a contemporary fantasy world of magic, danger, and searing romance.

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life-working hard all day and partying all night - until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She'll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose - to assassinate his boss' enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he's offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City's underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion - one that could set them both free, if they'd only let it.

With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and pause-resisting suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by number one global bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom - and the power of love.

The Arc of the Crescent

Chapter 1: I'll never follow all this complexity. Chapters 2 & 3: I can't believe I paid money for this crap. Chapters 4+: Well, this is actually a pretty good sci fi, fantasy, romance, noir mystery. Chapters 50+: wow, this is really good... Chapters 60+: ... and a little bit pornographic. Chapters 90+: I can't stop listening. Good thing I don't have to get up early tomorrow. Epilogue: I'm definitely getting the next one.

A Great Listen, Excellent Story and Narration

Angels, demons, everything In between & some decent smut in the mix, what is there not to like in this one? I truly enjoy stories that can successfully stand alone even when in a series. Well over 25 hours of pure enjoyment. I could not stop listening especially the last several hours. Will definitely be getting the next one.

Maas at her best

Maas’ writing shines brighter than ever before. Her characters are written beautifully, feeling realistic in approach and their interactions with their struggles. Add in Throne of Glass Narrator Elizabeth Evans and you have a guaranteed hit. HOEAB marks the strongest start to a Maas series, with a riveting world that begs to be explored, from different planets to a hierarchy of species and their intricate cultures.

Draws you in

This story was a bit slow to begin, but draws you in after a few chapters. It had me crying at one point. I can't wait to get to the next book in the series.

Fantastic world building and character development

Excellent, even when doing a reread to prepare for the sequels. Fantastic world building. Strong character development (although sometimes a bit heavy handed). Great writing and nice narration.

Love the story

It had its sappy moments but had a lot of action. I can’t wait until the werewolves are more involved.

Worth it

If you like Sarah J. Maas’s ACOTAR series than you’ll probably enjoy this. The first few chapters are a little tedious but that’s to be expecting since it’s the first story in a series. After you gets past the world building to the actual plot the book is amazing (I listened to the entire book in 2 days).
