About this listen

To lead a good life, we must know what is good. Our highest good is what is eternal and lasting. It is to know God in all that by which he makes himself known. And yet, in sin, we are alienated from God. How can we be redeemed so that we can begin to lead a good life? William Perkins, with precision and clear reasoning, takes us step by step through thinking about this problem. This book preserves his original text, and although the English usage is older, he is wrestling with concerns that are ever-present.

Plato said that philosophy is preparation to die. There are only two options: be prepared or don't be prepared. Why do we die at all? What is the relationship between sin and death? The sting of death is sin. Plato did not see his own need for redemption and so does not help us on that front. Perkins explains the two kinds of death, spiritual and physical, and what can be done about each. Here, you will find a greater understanding of what most people prefer not to talk about.

William Perkins (1558-1602) was a leader of the Puritan movement in England. He was a conformist member of the Church of England but was sympathetic to some non-conformists and opposed attempts to impose conformity. He was a fellow at Christ Church, Cambridge. His theology about double predestination and the Covenant of Grace are central to Reformed soteriology.
