About this listen

Summoned to another world to slay the mighty beast . . . of governance! (And soon to be an anime!)

When Kazuya Souma is unexpectedly transported to another world, he knows the people expect a hero. But Souma's idea of heroism is more practical than most—he wants to rebuild the flagging economy of the new land he's found himself in! Betrothed to the princess and abruptly planted on the throne, this realist hero must gather talented people to help him get the country back on its feet—not through war, or adventure, but with administrative reform!

It's a kind of slice of castle life story from a low-key king's perspective. It has lots of neat Japanese references.

It's good stuff

I thought that the story and Characters were really great and fun, and I felt that the narrator was really good. I could feel the emotions from the Characters.

Great Charactors and Great Story

Story was enjoyable and the narrator was good. However, when he narrated female character dialogue. It was at best, slightly jarring and at worst, immersion breaking.

Would benefit from 2 narrators

Overall a good story about economic and infrastructure reform.

There is a flaw in the narration. At points the story will switch perspective between paragraphs. A larger cast of voices or a second narrator would help. Both would be preferable.

The use of background sounds or music could help at points, but this is not that big of a production.

Some cultural elements like polygamy and slavery are mentioned in the story.

Overall better than most, but there are a few better in production quality. The Story is almost its own category of light novel. It avoids man pit falls of the Modern Isakie.

A good start

it sounds like he's chewing gum and it's hard to get past it. I love the anime but it's need a female reader to do all the other characters cuz his girl voice is horrendous. At least he a good job on the guys.

back ground noise

Anime

I'm 2 books in and with the exception of a few bits that are NOT story breaking or world breaking you can safely skip the book or anime for the other.

I watched the anime when it was a first run and it was good, but after 2 books it's a waste, there's really nothing here that wasn't in the show that's important. This ain't like hollywood movies that are drastically different than the book.

Anyway, I won't be getting any more of the books, and I won't refund the 2 I have. I'll just watch the anime and be content because so far the books really don't offer anything better or more.

You're not missing anything if you've watched the

I found myself surprised at how interesting and good the story and characters are despite my initial reaction to the sample.

Surprisingly good

In the isekai subgenre, there are some whose appeal lies with an original premise, some that rely on engrossing characters, and others that are built on the detailed nature of the world that the protagonist gets transported to. This series' appeal lies squarely in the third category, though the fact that the protagonist is gradually revealed to be an unabashed admirer of Machiavelli's ideas (but paradoxically also possesses a strong moral code) helps, too.

As for the narration, where some publishers will hire voice actors from English dubs when a series has already been adapted into an anime, in this case, they've opted for someone who specializes in audiobook narration. As a result, the performance can take some getting used to, since BJ Harrison doesn't feel the need to emulate Japanese voice acting conventions. As a result, nearly every character sounds significantly more subdued than they do in the English dub of the series, and in many cases his takes on characters are completely unexpected. That said, once you get used to his style of storytelling, it's very engaging.

A solid worldbuilding isekai.
