Publisher's summary
A GROUNDBREAKING GUIDE TO BECOMING YOUR ULTIMATE, CONFIDENT SELF, BY AWARD-WINNING CELEBRITY STYLIST AND THE WORLD'S ONLY IMAGE ARCHITECT, LAW ROACH
Law Roach is the mastermind behind looks that have broken the Internet time and again—from Zendaya at the Met Gala to Anya Taylor-Joy at the Golden Globes; from Lewis Hamilton’s iconic streetwear to Céline Dion’s style renaissance. Nobody knows better than Law how to turn an outfit into a moment of fashion history. In a little more than a decade, he’s gone from industry outsider to the most celebrated name in style, having been honored two consecutive years with the Hollywood Reporter’s prestigious Stylist of the Year award and receiving the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s inaugural Stylist Award in 2022.
Now, for the first time ever, Law shares the secrets of his approach. With How to Build a Fashion Icon, he takes listeners behind the scenes of his process and journey, revealing his tips, tricks, and most memorable styling moments to show listeners how to live their most iconic and fashionable lives. Part self-help guide, part manifesto, this book will guide listeners step by step through that process, and along the way Law will weave in personal anecdotes—from his childhood in the South Side of Chicago to the first time he styled Zendaya—with practical exercises to help listeners cultivate the most essential feature of iconic style: confidence.
“He loves and is very passionate about fashion … and finding something that exists already and creating a twist out of it. That’s his talent: He knows when it’s time to do something.”—Céline Dion, Vogue France

Before she wrote Off with My Head, a book about hitting what felt like rock bottom, Stassi Schroeder was writing an entirely different story: a basic bitch’s guide on how to be—wait for it—a “girlboss.” But then 2020 came along and after a global pandemic, losing her job, becoming pregnant and having her first child, and getting married, suddenly being a girlboss wasn’t the vibe. Instead of giving up, Stassi grew up and learned from her mistakes (you know, just standard evolution).

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Story
During André Leon Talley’s first magazine job, alongside Andy Warhol at Interview, a fateful meeting with Karl Lagerfeld began a decades-long friendship with the enigmatic, often caustic designer. Propelled into the upper echelons by his knowledge and adoration of fashion, André moved to Paris as bureau chief of John Fairchild’s Women’s Wear Daily, befriending fashion's most important designers (Halston, Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta). But as André made friends, he also made enemies.

With his now-legendary store on 125th Street in Harlem, Dapper Dan pioneered high-end streetwear in the 1980s, remixing classic luxury-brand logos into his own innovative, glamorous designs. But before he reinvented haute couture, he was a hungry boy with holes in his shoes, a teen who daringly gambled drug dealers out of their money, and a young man in a prison cell who found nourishment in books. In this remarkable memoir, he tells his full story for the first time.

Why does fashion hold so much power over us? Most of us care about how we dress and how we present ourselves. Style offers clues about everything from class to which in-group we belong to. Bad Feminist for fashion, Dress Code takes aim at the institutions within the fashion industry while reminding us of the importance of dress and what it means for self-presentation. Everything—from societal changes to the progress (or lack thereof) of women’s rights to the hidden motivations behind what we choose to wear to align ourselves with a particular social group—can be tracked through clothing.

A message for everyone
I really enjoyed each chapter of this book. There was a lot of great insight from Law’s own experiences and he beautifully narrates it to feel like a conversation you’d have with your best friend. It felt personal in the sense that all the advice felt genuine in him wanting you to win and live a life of confidence. I really enjoyed the part during the manifesting section — the reference of being scared to walk on hot coals because our mind expects the pain. However we can rethink struggle and fear and instead anticipate something positive. In summary it’s all mental. There are many notes made that I will apply into my day to day life as an artist. This book isn’t just for the fashionistas. It’s for everyone who may need guidance or a reminder that you are that girl!

A smart and practical guide on how to define your own personal style by unlocking your most confident self
I loved this book. I found myself personally relating to a lot of Law’s anecdotes, nodding along and smiling to his advice, and feeling like I had an insiders perspective on key moments in his career. I love that Law chose not to make this a personal style handbook but thought about it more as giving us the tools we need to be confident and as such, find our own unique personal style. By focusing on the self - Law will no doubt influence a wave of folks to become their best selves
