About this listen
Imagine a well-read man.
Do you see a machine dressed in tweed gorging on information? This book is not about becoming that kind of reader.
The well-read man wakes up and consults with Moses on the way to work.
He sips his coffee and ponders the wisdom of Hannibal's elephants crossing the Alps.
He turns furrowed-browed philosophers upside down and takes their lunch money.
He changes his oil and deliberates with Peter Drucker about effective management practices.
He regales his wife with the tale of Monet's water lilies in the Gardens at Giverny.
He sings with Sandra Boynton as his toddlers' eyes grow heavy.
This book is about becoming that man. Be as human as you can be.

In The Surprising Genius of Jesus, Peter J. Williams examines the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15 to show the genius, creativity, and wisdom of Jesus’s teachings. He used simple but powerful stories to confront the Pharisees and scribes of the day, drawing on his knowledge of the Jewish Scriptures to teach his audience.

It has never been more difficult to flee sexual immorality and pursue holiness. We live in an age of unprecedented access to sexual temptation. Previous generations faced adultery, prostitution, and brothels. But not every person had a brothel in their pocket. Our society’s obsession with sex, coupled with the technologies that make pornography so accessible, make it more challenging than it’s ever been. The result is that our families, our churches, and our society are being devastated by a pornography epidemic.

Story
Writing to a friend who was disillusioned by religion, minister and theologian Henry Scougal created what would become a classic text on Christian living. Compassionately explaining what true religion is and isn't, Scougal shares biblical practices that lead to real spiritual transformation. In The Life of God in the Soul of Man, Scougal cuts through false ideas about religion and demonstrates how to pursue true unity with God. He explains that religion shouldn't be primarily focused on restraining or dictating outward behavior, but living a divine life characterized by faith.

The Christian life is a process of growing in holiness, our natural response to the good news of our redemption in Christ. This kind of growth is gradual, and obstacles are plentiful. Thankfully, we don't have to go it alone. God has given us his Spirit so that we can overcome temptation and become more and more conformed to the image of Christ. But how does the Spirit work? What is the nature of our own personal involvement in the process? And how do we know if we are making progress?

Story
Every new project (or job, or hobby, or company) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point: really hard, and not much fun at all. And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you're in a Dip: a temporary setback that you will overcome if you keep pushing. But maybe it's really a Cul-de-Sac, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.

Incredible and helpful
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book; I listened to Andy Naselli read it while reading and marking up my print copy. I learned a lot of new helpful information on how to read a book better.

The most worthwhile read.
Concerning my ability and desire to read, I often victimize myself and say, "I wish I could've received a classical Christian education," or, "I wish I was saved earlier in life." However, having finished this book, I believe I've lost all reasoning to this mentality. Dr. Naselli's teaching on HOW to read (survey, macro, and micro) may very well prove itself to be the most profitable instruction I've received apart Scripture. I can't wait to listen to this again and/or to purchase it in print so I can study a little more in-depth. Thank you, Dr. Naselli, you've truly blessed my life.
