About this listen

Here is a classic (1955) story about a boy and a dog that is different. It is about a dog that had to survive on the wild frontier—and a pup that must choose between her master and her own savage half-relatives, the wolves. It is a story that will tug at your heart—and make your pulse race. It will take you back to the days when America was young, and the Conestoga wagons were heading west, and a youngster learned to grow up in the wilderness.

Listeners who loved “Born Free" The Story Of Elsa The Lioness, will love the story of Star. Fortune flung open the door. “You go back. This isn't business for you.”

“I'm going to hold the lantern.” Obie said.

Obie's father was determined. “If I catch that wolf dog of yours running with the pack, his time is up.”

Several wolves raced by. One of them ran along the edge of the light. It had white feet. There was just a passing flash but it looked like Star. Obie's heart leapt high in his throat...

Critic reviews

“This author's first YA novel is a warm pioneer story of two dogs and the boy who must prove they are faithful. From Ohio the Shane family, Fortune, Belle and their son Obie come by Conestoga wagon train to settle in deserted Sioux territory. Fortune, afraid that Obie's dog Tip will run wild with the wolves, leaves her to be killed in the nearby town of Salado, but the dog escapes to join them. Later Tip does go to the wilds. When she returns, the puppies she bears are killed by Fortune, all except Star who is secretly raised by Obie. Out of the ordinary.” Kirkus Reviews

“THE MOST BELOVED ANIMAL STORY OF THE SEASON.” —THE NEW YORK TIMES
