About this listen
What happens when a young girl is abruptly taken away from everyone and everything she knows?
When the comforts of a Bayou home are pulled from under the feet of young Rahab Auguste, she must rise above and face the challenges on the streets of the South Bronx. Discovering family secrets withheld from her, Rahab embarks on a journey down a path she never saw coming, with a mother she never knew.
I Am Rahab: A Novel is a coming-of-age tale cleverly depicting the biblical account of Rahab the prostitute before the fall of Jericho, as told through the present day story of Rahab Auguste. This multi-generational fictional story is the first in a three-part series chronicling the life of Rahab as she discovers the truth about life, the pain of death, and the meaning of survival.
Life rotates in cycles, and if you’re not careful you can end up on a road not meant for you to travel. For a young girl plagued by her family's past, her path is just beginning.

Angel Hill is a loner, mostly disregarded by her peers as a goody-goody. Her father is dying, and her family's financial situation is in turmoil. Tena was born in 1953 in a tiny Mississippi town close to the Alabama border, where the legacy of slavery and racial injustice still permeated every aspect of life. When a 70-year-old woman finds a five-year-old girl abandoned on her doorstep, she is thrust into a sorrowful past that can only be conquered with the help of the girl who opened her memory - the very girl she is trying to save. This first novel, according to author Jacquelyn Mitchard, is one of "exquisite power, honesty, and conviction...quite nearly without flaws."

Story
In the summer of 1928, sixteen-year-old Minka was looking forward to a sewing class picnic. This would be a rare chance to put aside farm chores, don a pretty dress, and enjoy an outing with other girls. It would be a day to remember. And it was - but not in the way Minka had dreamed. Cornered by a stranger in the woods, the young girl was assaulted. Minka still believed that the stork brought babies; she would not discover for months that she was pregnant.

Loved it!
I already read They Call me Gomer and now I am digging into the Rahab series. Such a great and layered story. This Auguste legacy is intense and full of drama. I really love these retellings of biblical characters! Awesome job!

Modern Rahab
First of all, bad on me for not noticing that the author very clearly states that this is the first book in a series. Since I didn't pay attention to this, I was a little surprised at the abrupt ending. BUT, that is MY fault, not the author's!
This is a wonderfully written coming of age tale of a young girl who is being raised by her grandmother, Lottie "Big Mama", who happens to be involved in voodoo in Louisiana. Rahab is the product of a horrific attack and her mother, Pua, wants nothing to do with her. As Rahab gets older, she attracts the unwanted attention of a pedophile. The author does a great job of horrifying the reader without giving explicit details of the encounter.
When Lottie dies unexpectedly, Rahab's world quickly changes when she is taken to NYC by her mother. I enjoyed the author's descriptions of the bayous of Louisiana and the streets of NYC. These descriptions added a lot to the story.
The book is full of excellent dialogue, hope and despair, and a look into life of a young mixed race girl in the South. The narrator(s) did a great job with the accents and added a lot to my enjoyment of the book. I look forward to continuing Rahab's story in the next book.
