Val Con yos'Phelium: a Scout, former Agent of Change, husband, brother to Turtles, and designated heir to Clan Korval's fortune and mission... Whether you considered him respectable or not, no one would call him a gambling man. When he reappears demanding Balance and retribution, he looks exactly like the kind of leader his clan has been producing for generations. On his capable shoulders the fate of his Clan, his world, and his civilization.... Pat Rin yos'Phelium: fond father, bon vivant, ne'er-do-well... and a professional gambler. The enemies of Korval have offered Pat Rin the Ring that would make all of Korval's holdings his own and a Juntavas Judge has offered Pat Rin a world....

When he appears with hired guns in tow, no one is expecting him and no one knows what he'll do. Pat Rin is a gambling man, and on his wild-card shoulders the fate of his Clan, his world, his civilization....

This long-awaited culmination of the Agent of Change sequence of Sharon Lee and Steve Miller's internationally acclaimed Liaden Universe novels pits unexpected friends and unexpected enemies against each other in a war that spans planets and races - and threatens to bring interstellar violence to the very surface of fabled Liad.

Narration 50%

Narration at times was truly upsettingly wrong for whole scenes, but i love the story too much to put it down, then later would realize narration was fine for this section.

Oh dear. The reading let's this down.

The story is, as usual, great. We have several different storyline which all progress entertainingly to a final confluence. Lots of interesting ideas and human interest. Sorry, if you want spoilers then read another review.

The reading is just odd. It's not just the weird accents, that I can actually ignore. The big issue is the bad pronunciation of common words. Things like pronouncing the 'l' in halve. HALve. Sometimes I am left wondering if the authors really don't know their homophones, or if it's simply terrible pronunciation. This drops me out of involvement in the story to contemplate the oddity and ponder the options.

Love this series!

It’s taken me forever to read/listen to this book because I didn’t want the series to end. Once I realized there were more books in the series, I got the audible version to supplement the book. The story was, as always, amazing. Not terribly found of the narration. The voices for some of the characters just didn’t sound right. In particular, not sure why Pat Rin’s voice is so nasal. Though a little off putting, I still liked having the audible option when my eyes got too tired reading.

What a fantastic buildup!

I came to the Liaden series by way of Theo Waitley, then went back and read the Agent of Change series when things started to not make too much sense--which was an excellent plan! After most of the previous books following Val Con and Miri, or Shan and Priscilla, this one heavily followed Pat Rin, and oh my goodness, his story line was just wonderful. Lee and Miller are master character thread weavers, and brought so many little character triumphs to the fore as they wove everything together into the finale of this book. I was literally bouncing on my seat, unable to stay still while cheering everyone on!

After this, I'd easily say the Liaden series is one of my top all time favorite series. And I have more books to go! That's the best part.

Awesome!

Engaging characters, believable story line. Well developed and engaging characters, action, romance, dedicated soldiers, all set with a backdrop of space flight and strategy. I love every one of their books!

always a favourite

Where does I Dare rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

place it in the top 10 %, it is always hard to choose

Who was your favorite character and why?

Meri - she adapts to ll the changes but keeps her quirks and makes them work ,

What about Andy Caploe’s performance did you like?

enjoyed his reading , flowed nicely the only thing I did not like was his choice of voice for Pat Rin , it felt jarring to me and I noticed it every time .I admit to not listening to the books in order so this may just be first time the character has come up in my listening.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes but that is true of almost all of the Books i have read or listened to by theses authors

Fun Conclusion to Space Saga

Enjoyed the book. Multiple points of view. Satisfying conclusion to the agent of change miniseries. Thought previous book Plan B was slightly better. Not as interested in Pat Rin’s story, but enjoyed whirlwind life mating of Ren Zel and Anthora. Very cute. Turtles, as always, entertain.

Part of my favorite series.

Although I usually prefer print over audio, because I like this series so much, I wanted it in as many formats as possible. I purchased the entire audio series as soon as it was available in 2012 but did not actually start listening to it until October 2013, finishing the entire five-volume "Agent of Change" sequence in just under two weeks.

For the most part, I enjoyed the audio version very much. I tend to read very fast and the audio forced me to slow down immensely; I even picked up on some scenes that I apparently missed while reading the series.

Mr. Caploe gives a good reading performance although I do disagree with the pronunciation of of certain (English) words. My main criticism of his performance deals with his character voice for Pat Rin in "I Dare". I have always had an affinity for Pat Rin, a quiet, elegant, and reticent person, and to hear him presented in a nasally, almost (to me) hoodlum-like voice was extremely off-putting and grating to the ear. Another voice that could have been done better was Anthora; he made her sound like some "Valley Girl" parody.

A Thrilling ride in the Liaden Universe

I can't decide if this is my favorite of the series or if Local Custom is. Never mind, it doesn't matter; I loved this book. I am so happy to have re-read it because there is an amazing amount of complexity that I missed the first time. This is my third time through the story but this time in Audible format. I have never listened to Andy Caploe before and it took awhile to warm up to his voice but I ended up really enjoying his interpretation of the various characters.

The story is like a complex weaving. The reader is kept abreast of several story lines on multiple planets and as the book comes to its conclusion the lines weave more tightly and faster and the next thing you know there is a fabulous cohesive series of events that tie everything together. A LOT happens in the last 50 pages of this book and it is exhilarating.
