About this listen

So get ready to trade your stale outlook for a hilarious new one.
Whether America's first lady of humor is poking fun at family life or taking a poignant look at the difficulties of aging, you'll laugh until the tears stream down your face. And with Barbara Rosenblat's rib-tickling performance, you'll feel as if you are sharing a cup of coffee with Erma herself.

“I now pronounce you husband and wife.” There are few phrases as sobering, with the possible exceptions of “We have lift-off” and “This country is at war.” Yet, as they have done for centuries, millions of courageous men and women continue to walk down the aisle every year, without so much as a job description. Now, in her most autobiographical book, Erma Bombeck puts it all in loving and laughing perspective, as she looks back on her own forty-three-year-but-who’s-counting marriage.

In Dad is Fat, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, who’s best known for his legendary riffs on Hot Pockets, bacon, manatees, and McDonald's, expresses all the joys and horrors of life with five young children - everything from cousins ("celebrities for little kids") to toddlers’ communication skills ("they always sound like they have traveled by horseback for hours to deliver important news"), to the eating habits of four-year-olds ("there is no difference between a four-year-old eating a taco and throwing a taco on the floor").

Story
Folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is the now-classic novel of two women in the 1980s; of gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women - of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Rut - -who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, a Southern kind of Cafe Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder.

Before Liz Lemon, before Weekend Update, before Sarah Palin, Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: A recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live. Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've always suspected: You're no one until someone calls you bossy.

Isn't that outdated. It's still funny stuff
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If they wanted to be amused, and especially if they were a parent, they'll like this.
Have you listened to any of Barbara Rosenblat’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, I haven't. She astounded me with her delivery. She could turn even a dull sentence into something witty, so this material was really quite funny with her at the microphone.
Any additional comments?
Bombeck's humor still holds up, though not quite as sharply as it did when it was originally written. You'll still get many chuckles out of this.
