Os Guinness describes these Christians as "impossible people", those who have "hearts that can melt with compassion but with faces like flint and backbones of steel who are unmanipulable, unbribable, undeterrable, and unclubbable, without ever losing the gentleness, the mercy, the grace, and the compassion of our Lord".

Few accounts of the challenge of today are more realistic, and few calls to Christian courage are more timely, resolute, and hopeful. Guinness argues that we must engage secularism and atheism in new ways, confronting competing ideas with discernment and fresh articulation of the faith. Christians are called to be impossible people serving an impossible God.

Every American and everyone around the world who believes in the American dream should read this book. Reread it every year. It is a book that brings us into balance. It is the plum line. It is a reminder for Judaeo-Christian values in our Western Civilization.The importance of holding onto eternal truths versus being led by our feelings and impulses is portrayed through history and contemporary examples. Impossible people should be mandatory reading in all levels of society: schools, jails, courts, educated, uneducated, families, churches, Civic organizations, book clubs, etc. Hearing it, read reinforces it.

Without condemnation Guinness brings conviction by condensing the issues that face humanity; historically, contemporarily and eternally. The chaff is blown away and the true points of contention between differing world views laid bare. I do not presume to speak for the author, but my impression is of a message to God’s church: Awaken!

This is my first book on Audible. I don't think I could have picked a better book to start with. Os just get better with time. His ability to communicate the challenge of the Church in our day is only matched by his biblical clarity of divine mission for God's people for all times. This is one that EVERY Christian should read. It may have been unfair for me to give only 3 stars for the "performance" considering the fact that I listened at 1.25 speed. It was just too slow at the normal rate.
