Roger and Penny Scaggs seemed a poster couple for family values. Evangelical Christians living in booming Austin, Texas, in the mid-1990s, they were respected leaders in their church and community. As Roger diligently worked his way up the high-tech corporate ladder, Penny kept a pristine home and coached similarly devout young women on how to be perfect wives. But on a windy March evening, this godly woman met the devil head-on.

After his December 2003 arrest, registered nurse Charlie Cullen was quickly dubbed "The Angel of Death" by the media. But Cullen was no mercy killer, nor was he a simple monster. He was a favorite son, husband, beloved father, best friend, and celebrated caregiver. Implicated in the deaths of as many as 300 patients, he was also perhaps the most prolific serial killer in American history.

Story
On May 31, 2014, in the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha, Wisconsin, two 12-year-old girls attempted to stab their classmate to death. Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier’s violence was extreme, but what seemed even more frightening was that they committed their crime under the influence of a figure born by the internet: the so-called “Slenderman”. Yet the even more urgent aspect of the story, that the children involved suffered from undiagnosed mental illnesses, often went overlooked in coverage of the case.

The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

He was the child she hid in plain view from the rest of her family. As an adult, he set out to just make a living - to do better than Black folks who tried their best before, while making his Momma and Grandmomma proud. His journey to becoming a successful TV journalist nearly killed him, but he refused to treat himself as a victim. His role was to use his voice and example to pull others out of deep waters.

Story
In a shattering work that shifts between a woman's private anguish over the loss of her beloved baby cousin and a scholar's fierce critique of the American prison system, Danielle Allen seeks answers to what, for many years, felt unanswerable. Why? Why did her cousin, a precocious young man who dreamed of being a firefighter and a writer, end up dead? Why did he languish in prison? And why, at the age of 15, was he in an alley in South Central Los Angeles, holding a gun while trying to steal someone's car?

Marginally better than Don Kline
I’m not sure if there are budget constraints in the true crime audiobook space or if they really just don’t care how very bad the narrators are that are used. I simply refuse to purchase a book narrated by Don Kline and I’m sad to say Patrick Lawlor is only better by the slimmest of margins. If it weren’t for a compelling case, I’d return this title.

What an amazing story worthy of a great book. However this is not much more than a boring history of Joshua. Too bad.

Too many details, made it boring and hard to stay
I had a hard time keeping my interest. Too many details making it feel like the author was just dragging the storytelling out, making it uninteresting after a short while of reading it.

Book is very out of date, no updated appendices.
Very interesting story overall. Well researched background material on characters. But comes off a little to sympathetic regarding the murderers. Almost as if the Author is naive to the lies a sociopath can tell. Joshua was an intelligent and smooth liar. (Eg: Joshua wanted to be an army sniper, and convinced the author that he excelled in his military skills. Yet Joshua held a Marksman badge --a minimal qualification. A soldier must achieve an Expert badge to even be considered for sniper training, and possess extraordinary self-discipline, indefatigable perservance and personal self-government to succeed in sniper training. No one who would desert his service could ever hope to achieve sniper status).

never got to the actual story
This is probably one of the worst books I've ever listened to. The book focused solely on the lives of the Killers and not the actual story of the victims in what happened. The book only spoke about 5% of the actual crime itself and 95% on the lives of the killers and how they grew up. Totally not interested at all.

Junk!
Would you try another book from Brian McDonald and/or Patrick Lawlor?
Never!
Would you ever listen to anything by Brian McDonald again?
No!
What didn’t you like about Patrick Lawlor’s performance?
He's a reader, not a performer.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from In the Middle of the Night?
All of them.
