About this listen

“Simply put—and I do not say this lightly—Incidents Around the House is the most purely effective horror novel I have ever read.”Neil McRobert, Esquire (Best Horror Books of 2024, So Far)

A chilling horror novel about a haunting, told from the perspective of a young girl whose troubled family is targeted by an entity she calls “Other Mommy,” from the New York Times bestselling author of Bird Box

“This book is the monster that lives inside your closet.”—Grady Hendrix, New York Times bestselling author of How to Sell a Haunted House

To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?”

When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay.

Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

But Other Mommy needs an answer.

Incidents Around the House is a chilling, wholly unique tale of true horror about a family as haunted as their home.

Annoying POV

i knew this book was from a child’s perspective but i didn’t know it would be narrated by one. i don’t know why but it was off putting even though she did a good job. i think this book would have been better read that audio. secondly, i don’t need the author to describe the innocence of a child and how the child perceives marital conflict. i can do that myself. lastly, although the word “daddo” was endearing at first, i wanted to rip my ears off by the first 1/3 of the book once i realized “daddo” was here to stay for the entirety of the book.

Very good, creepy story

I enjoyed this a lot. It consistently kept up a good, creepy mood, peppered with some scenes with memorably scary imagery. The user of first-person voice from the central little girl was an interesting choice that helped the book feel distinct, in setting the viewpoint as someone who doesn't completely understand all of the themes and events taking place with the older characters around her. I wasn't sure how I would like the audiobook largely being narrated by someone using a child's voice, but it worked well after I got used to it - listen to the other reviewers' advice to slow it down a bit below 1x speed, though. I usually listen to books a little sped up, but this one felt like it was a bit too fast and had some audio issues pop up when played faster than normal.

Aside from that, my only real gripe was that it sagged a bit in the last hour or so, and featured the most examples of its occasional problem of the adults using language that feels overly written and unrealistic. But that wasn't a huge issue, and it wrapped back around to be a solidly creepy ending. Overall, a strong recommendation.

Horrifying story! Great narration!!

This is a great ghost story that truly leaves you wondering what is going to happen next, and the narration by Delaney is awesome! For fans of Stephen King!

Excellent narration and engrossing story with disappointing ending.

Fantastic plot with realistic responses by the characters. The childs narration and point of view was excellent and believable. The plot was scary and the characters were believable but deserved a better final explanation. I hated the ending as it was incredibly unfulfilled in it's potential.

Absolutely Terrifing!!!

Great Read, finished it in 1 day. The fact it's from a little girls perspective is amazing and creepy all in it's own right. Highly recommend

Good but not great

This book was really overhyped for me I think. I couldn’t wait to listen and heard it was so creepy but I wasn’t very scared at all throughout the book, I think it may have been the sweet peppy voice but it didn’t creep me out even listening at night. The ending also was very confusing. I enjoyed the story and the characters but was just expecting more I guess. Still worth the listen for sure

TikTok Made Me Buy It

And I have no regrets. It was entertaining, spooky and at times unsettling and uncomfortable.

The creepiness.

The description Other Mommy stood out to me the most. It was very creepy and loved the way she was described in this book.

Voice actor was phenomenal.

Overall a really great story, I think Bella could’ve been written a bit better as this felt like what an adult thinks an 8 year old should act and think like but fell a little flat.
