Publisher's summary

From the author of Driving Lessons, Saving Ruth, and Balancing Acts comes a poignant breakout novel about a single mother who inherits a beautiful beach house with a caveat - she must take care of the ornery elderly woman who lives in it.

For years Maggie Sheets has been an invisible hand in the glittering homes of wealthy New York City clients, scrubbing, dusting, mopping, and doing all she can to keep her head above water as a single mother. Everything changes when a former employer dies, leaving Maggie a staggering inheritance - a house in Sag Harbor. The catch? It comes with an inhabitant: the deceased's 82-year old mother, Edith.

Edith has Alzheimer's - or so the doctors tell her - but she remembers exactly how her daughter, Liza, could light up a room or bring dark clouds in her wake. And now Liza's gone by her own hand, and Edith has been left - like a chaise or strand of pearls - to a poorly dressed young woman with a toddler in tow.

Maggie and Edith are both certain this arrangement will be an utter disaster. But as summer days wane, a tenuous bond forms, and Edith, who feels the urgency of her diagnosis, shares a secret that she's held close for five decades, launching Maggie on a mission that might just lead them both to what they are looking for.

A book worth READING

The story was good; performance awful. There were a few times I really thought I’d have to give up listening.

No one should try to imitate a 2.5 year old.

Zoe can weave a tale.

I thought this book was a heartfelt journey that introduced the reader to a number of unforgettable characters. The process of transformation and change is so much a part of all of our lives , and in this book we were able to experience something identifiable and real. The only thing that bothered me was giving a two-year-old such an extensive vocabulary, which unless she is considered a gifted child was not realistic. The narrative was exceptional until she did the child's voice.

Is their more?

Interesting premise for a story. There were points that were too detailed and gritty and then that non ending. Not one I will keep on my shelf.

Another wonderful narration by Cassandra Campbell! Brava!

I’ll be honest, I got this book because of Cassandra’s skilful narration (I follow her to my next book), but I ended up really enjoying the story - a book well done, Zoe Fishman! I genre I normally wouldn’t be that much interested, but I surprized myself by falling into the story head first. A really great story with a lot of twists - A LOT! I was disappointed to hear the guy at the end say - This is Audible, and we hope you’ve enjoyed.... Thank you, ladies for an enjoyable trip! Can’t wait for the next one!

A beautiful book

A book about relationships and healing. The characters came to life for me. The narration was brilliant.

Interesting Book

I don't think there is a need for the swearing. It would have been better without that. The first couple of chapters do repeat. But once you get past them it's an interesting read. I have cared for a loved one with dementia/alzheimer's. It's not easy to watch a loved one that has this disease.

Very Good Book, I Was Impressed.

My Mother is struggling with dementia, so this book was easy for me to relate too. I could understand what Meghan was thinking, and what she was trying to tell her young daughter.

A Wonderful Listen

An enjoyable listen that starts out with a tragedy, but winds ends with kindness and love. Interesting people who learn to live together, love and find happiness in what ever is coming next.

Too many loose ends

The ending was schmaltzy. Esther was my favorite character. The child spoke like a 2 yr old in the beginning then her vocabulary got advanced for her age. The phrases she used were for an older child and the narrator was obnoxious when she spoke as the 2yr old.

Charming

I inherited my father too. We had a complicated relationship but came to the same wonderful kind of resolve as Maggie and Edith. For many this book will be relevant.
