Good Start for a New World and Characters

Into the Shadow of Dark: The Mysterious World of Professor Darkk and Miss Shadow, Book 0. Written by Jeff Walker and narrated by Matthew Coyle. This is an introduction of sorts, a prequel that drops the listener into a short story of world-building to establish the rules of this universe. The story begins when a demon attacks a bank and Professor Darkk and Miss Shadow come onto the scene to stop it. The listener learns how they work together and how this world works. This short story is a very good way to gauge your interest if you would want to delve further into this world or not once the author creates more content.

The narration by Matthew Coyle was very enjoyable. This is the first audio performance that I have heard from Mr. Coyle. He did an excellent job of giving each character a unique voice; also his deep voice is just awesome for this type of storytelling. I look for to hearing more of this narrator’s performance in the future. I recommend this short story. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

A neat introduction

This book serves as an introduction prequel to a coming series. And in that it serves it's purpose. It tells a short story of a demon attacking a bank and Professor Darkk and Miss Shadow coming to stop it. The story itself is not overly gripping but it does serve as a good introduction to the world and to the characters. It sets up some of their abilities, their relationship (mysterious teacher and his student), and gives some hint at the mystery of Darkk. Overall worth the listen. I may pick up the first book when it comes out, based on this teaser.

Matthew Coyle is generally good as the narrator. One thing did annoy me, which was the inclusion of mouth noise as sound effect. The text says 'he cleared his throat noisily and said....' and Coyle included a loud clearing of his throat in his narration. Some may find this good for the immersion or something, but I am not a fan of it. Beyond that instance, he was good. well paced, a deep voice that works well for the dark, supernatural content.

Teaser

Thus is a short listen, but it will grab you and make you want more from the start. In the little I heard the narrator seems to be perfect for this start to a what I hope is an awesome series.

Mixed bag

This story has a lot going for it as a stepping stone to a larger work. There's good consistent atmosphere. The world has an obvious complexity to explore and there's an implied history which merits future discovery. The characters aren't very interesting yet but aren't constrained to be featureless. I see good potential for growth. Fortunately, since this is part 0 expansion seems likely.

The writing itself could be better. It comes across as very inexperienced. This isn't helped by the flat narration which does the writing a disservice.

The author clearly has some great ideas but isn't quite there yet. I look forward to 2 or 3 books from now when he really comes into his own.

Interesting

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This book starts right in the middle of demonic action in a bank. It was quite interesting, but it was quite short so there was no time for character development or background. It introduces the two main characters for the series, but you can't guess at what they are or why they're important. It definitely makes me want to know more.

Interesting Start

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

This is the first of two short stories featuring Professor Darkk and Miss Shadow. The second is Haunted House on Henry Street. As there is no book (yet) featuring these characters and no real background is provided regarding these characters, I would describe this story as a teaser or trailer for the book.

Here, nefarious activity is occurring at a bank full of people. Professor Darkk and his protege Miss Shadow are called in to deal with it.

Overall, I liked the story and these MC characters, but having no context as to their abilities and why they were called to deal with everything (and who called them) - as I said before, this reads more like a teaser of a full blown work (which in reality does not exist). The story is well written and enjoyable but left me wanting...

The narrator did a nice job. He has a nice deep baritone voice which lends itself well to the story. However, having listened to the other story with these characters (previously referenced), which is narrated by a different narrator - I prefer the other narrator over this one.

Good start to a promising new series...

Into the Shadow of Dark, which is the intro of The Mysterious World of Professor Darkk and Miss Shadow series by Jeff Walker was fun, interesting, and I'm looking forward to listening to more. This is a quick listen, running at just over a half hour. I'll admit that in the beginning I was a little bored and had pretty much decided that this series wasn't for me. It was in the last half of the intro that things finally came together and really piqued my interest. Now I want to learn more about Miss Shadow and the mysterious Professor Darkk, who you only hear from at the very end of the intro when he is talking to Miss Shadow. As for the intro itself, since it's so short, I don't want to spoil anything other than say that Miss Shadow and another person are able to handle this demonic being that's attacking a group of people. You aren't quite sure who Miss Shadow is or how she fits into things and how she has the ability to fend of a demonic being. I'm sure when Book 1 is out we will find out though!

I felt that Matthew Coyle did a good job with the narration. I didn't find his voice flat or emotionless, as a few others have stated. i thought of this story as sort of a dark, demonic noir type story and I felt that his voice and narration fit the book well. He was easy to understand, had a good cadence, and I feel that he was a good choice to narrate this book. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

Interesting, Want More!

I am definitely intrigued, and definitely enough to want more!
Great job with the story, and the writing and narration were great.

Sort of like a noir dr strange

I got a kick out of this intro story. The MC and his sidekick remind me very much of Dr strange but as a suit wearing cane carrying fellow rather than the whole cape thing, sort of a noir version. This story finds the two confronting a drake entity in a bank that is living off of the fear it has created in its captives...with a bit of a twist. Well played!
